Rowland Harley's Shropshire, 1586.
« on: Tuesday 08 December 09 05:29 GMT (UK) »
Having got the bare dates of my lineage back 11 generations to Rowland Harley of Ditton Priors in 1586 I wondered if anyone has any research on 'branches and twigs' I've come across. These include Penn, Bridgman, Hamer, Peacock, Griffiths, Good and Croxton. They're all from South Shrops extending to Clun and Ludlow one way and Burwarton and Church Stretton another. Mostly around Morville, Ditton Priors and Chetton in the furthest past.

I'm interested in the places and people they were associated with as much as them individually. I would love to receive documentary evidence of S.Shrops life and stories, hearsay, legend or anecdotal evidence about their 'time and place'.

I'm from Shropshire and hope to move back there next year after 32 years so this is a long term project and I'd appreciate any information,

Thank you,

Alan Harley

Alan
One line of my tree leads back to a FREDERICK HARLEY b 1825 in Kington, Herefordshire.
He married a Jane (surname unknown) who was b1826 in Worcester.
By 1851 they were living in Birmingham.
I haven't done much research on this part of the family as yet, so will be interested to find if we have any links.
Thanks
All counties -Brightley, Brightwell; Cambridgeshire - Peggs; Staffordshire / Derbyshire - Hollis, Myatt, Kidd; Birmingham / West Midlands - Woolley, Harley; Warwickshire - Warren; Oxfordshire - Golby/ Goldby, Ashmore; Herefordshire - Harley

The Ditton Priors Court Rolls have been published and may lead you back further. It was part of the Wenlock Priory land before 1540 and documents are in the Forester Collection at Shropshire Archives.

Thank you. I must try to look into them at some point as the Harleys have a long history in that area,

My branch of the Harley family are decended from Rowland Harley's brother John. I think Thomas Harley the eldest brother was a yeoman of  farm in Tedstil, and that Rowland and John farmed in Underton on a copyhold farm as I have found references to 'Harley's' farm in the cresset family papers.

Would like to cross check this with anyone else researching the Harley's in Chetton.

My branch left chetton after 1740 and ended up farming in Glascwm and I still have family who farm in the area.

Today I received a Settlement Examination in Ditton Priors for my 3x great Grandfaher Richard

Hickman born in Frodesley 1743, his mother an only child Susan Hickman ,he was illegitimate

Susan married Richard Langford in 1746 ,it is to long to put on here but part says

" at ten he was hired with his uncle Richard Everall of the parish of Leebotwood who he lived for

the space of five years and from moves to cousin Rowland Harleye of the parish of Morville in the

said county of Condover"

I have no ideah how either of these are connected unless somewhere in amongst was his father.

I have a tree on tribal pages.
