re internment sydney 1945
« on: Monday 07 December 09 18:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Unsure if anyone can help or direct me to the place I could look for this person I know that he died in Sydney in 1945 whilst on board a ship, I believe
that  he was in the navy/ merchant navy!  I would like to know how he died and what he was doing on the ship that he was on. (unsure if this is possible! but here goes!)

His name was William George Wallace, he was from Bristol, England. and his date of birth was 1898

Any help gratefully received

Hi there,

Not sure if this is your chap, but from the online index for NSW BDM http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm

There's the registration at Sydney for the death of a William George WALLACE with father recorded as Frank and mother recorded as Rhoda Harriet.  The reference number is 117/1945.

Here's the Rootschat NSW Resources links about NSW BDM certificates, what information is on them, and transcription services available.

Hi All

Thanks very much, this is the correct William George, Mother Rhoda and Father Frank from Frenchay. I will get my son in Brisbane to order certificate and see what details it has on it.  There have been family rumours that he fell to his death in the hold of a ship.  So it will be interesting to see how far out these facts are!!

Percival, Williams brother was also at sea for quite a while and then was a lifeboat man in Swanage, Dorset, England. also another brother was at sea, so it seems they were a sea faring family!!!

As I am a novice really to family research I am grateful for both your help.   ;) Ironic that I was in Sydney this time last year and did not know the connection at that time.
Many thanks

Hi there,

Thanks Jenn,  hopefully we are on track, so perhaps the following would be the marriage of William George Wallace's parents... noting the variation in the spelling of the surname...

Frank WALLIS to Rhoda Harriet HIBBARD July-September quarter of 1894 registered at Bristol ..... Vol 6a page 67

Sorry Tidler, I haven't any clues about tracking down the name of the merchant/navy vessels around Sydney in 1945, most likely the docks would have been on war alert basis until mid August.

Cheers,

JM

Hi JM

Yes these are the two,  for some unknown reason they changed all their children's names to Wallace, some family members say that it was recorded wrong at time of the first ones birth, but still not sure why.

Going to order birth certificates of one or two of the children to see how Rhoda and Frank referred to themselves.  Wallace stayed the family name until present day though.

Many thanks

I am thinking that perhaps  there would have been an inquest into his death.

If you ckecked out t he links as supplied by JM you would know that Australian Crtificates have a lot of information on  them including the cause of death and where he is buried.

I am not sure about inquest records for NSW though

Hi there,

I think the family story about William George Wallace's fall is right... here's a link to a newspaper article about the accident at Glebe Island.  Very Sad...

The Canberra Times (ACT : 1926-1954) Saturday 20 January 1945 pg 2
