John Marshall and Anne Reed were my GGGGGParents. I have a copy of Johns death cert somewhere. He died March 29 1880 in Hartley. Person registering death was Jesse Dawson, of Hartley.
In 1871 he was a widower living at 30 Double Row, Seaton Delaval, with family including daughter Elizabeth age 28. RG10/5130/39/9.

Hi Alan thank you, David John Marshall and Catharine Reed are my great x 3 Grandparents.  Does Jane Harrison Dawson come into your tree at all or are Jesse and Isabella not her parents?  :)

I've got Jane H Dawson in my tree as a daughter of Jesse Dawson and Elizabeth Marshall as per the census records. Elizabeth was the third daughter of John and Anne named Elizabeth so maybe thats why she used her middle name.
Its 99% certain that she's your Jane Harrison Dawson, but you would need her birth or marriage cert to be 100% certain.
Its not my branch, I'm connected through Mary Ann Marshall, eldest daughter of John and Anne, baptised May 26 1822, Jarrow, but it does look like we are very distant cousins

Yes i am very certain its the right people, like i posted earlier a baptism record would be great right about now  :)

Hopefully i can find out that this is correct, i can fill in Jane's descendants for your tree if we find out that it is 100% connected!  It would also be good to know if both our Reeds/Marshalls were connected other than through the marriage of Isabella Marshall but i haven't found out anything about David J Marshall before his marriage because of the age and lack of census back then.

Thanks for your replies  :)

Looking at the 1901 census for Jesse Dawsons family,  he has a son Matthew Harrison Dawson.
In 1891 he had a daughter Jane H. Dawson and a son Matthew H. Dawson.
Lets make it 99.99% certain that his daughter Jane H. Dawson is Jane Harrison Dawson. RG13/4809/30/6.

Ha yes i would think so personally  :)

Jane has a son in 1901 Jesse Alexander Ewen Marshall, it would be a very strange coincedence for my Jane to name her son Jesse and her not be the Jane Dawson who has a father and brother named Jesse!

I think without a doubt i have just found confirmation that Jane Harrison Dawson is the daughter of Jesse Dawson, in 1871 when Jesse is living with his brother there are children with the name 'Ewen' i am unsure where this name fits into the family yet but as i posted earlier, one of Jane's children is Jesse Alexander Ewen Marshall.

Now i just need to find out who the 'Ewen' came from, the children in 1871 say 'Nephew'  Jesse Dawson Ewen 4, George Ewen 3, Both born Seaton Sluice.

There are far too many links in these people for them not to be the correct family. :)

Edit : Sarah Dawson married John Ewen 1865 (Sarah the daughter of Jesse and Jane).

It turns out that John Ewen is the son of George Ewen of Scotland and the family owned the Salmon fishing rights of St Mary's Island and built cottages there, they eventually turned it into an Inn before being evicted off the Island for too much noise in 1895.

It has always been said that in our family that the Dawson's used to own St Mary's Lighthouse, which obviously they didn't as John Ewen is the connection we have to it and he is a relation through marriage to a Dawson, and the Lighthouse didn't even exist when he lived on the Island it was built circa 1898.  Both John and George were Salmon fishermen and Inn Keepers.

Hi Staceyk84/Allan,
Fantastic :) ;)

It all looks pretty conclusive to me.
I would put the Certs on a "present list" though Stacey, as if you are like me I love to hold them in my hand. It brings more flesh and blood to otherwise just names and dates on paper.

Best of luck and it is amazing you have each found another descendant.

Trish :)

Thanks Trish :)  My Mum will be pleased when i tell her the story surrounding St Mary's Island, the family have always said there was a connection to the lighthouse now we know it's the Island itself not the lighthouse!
