Hi Roby,

I am assuming that it is 1859 for the death of Niel McLeod aged 33 parents Jon and Catherine rego #6904 and not 1869?

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Yes Robyn it is the 1859 death , sorry (typo error) even though the parents are not correct I may still get the cert . Niel's parents were John and Elizabeth,(but the 1st wife was Catherine )who knows stranger things have been recorded.  :-\

Yes Judith I agree there are a lot of parallels  but I feel this is not the family.
I have looked at  MCLeods in Purnim previously, and decided they were not connected, but with a name like Torquil I thought there may be a link  somewhere. so thank you Dale,  you have helped to sort that.

I believe that Torquil is the anglicanised version of Torcal, but would welcome any further discussion on this.   :)
Thank you Sue for the Tasmanian links, I wil check this out.

Again thank you all for your time

Hi Roby

Niel McLeod is one of mine so don't buy the death certificate!!! He was a son of John McLeod who married Catherine McSwain in 1815 in Raasay.

Catherine died in 1835 in Raasay. John then married Flora McIntosh. They came to Australia in 1854 on board the "Edward Johnston" and settled in the Purnim area.

I see that you have connections with the "Ticonderoga". Many of the McLeods on board that ship also tie in with the Purnim and Mortlake areas. Let me know if I can help further as I have compiled a large tree on the descendants of John and Catherine. (and John and Flora too).

John (known as Iain Bhain because of his white hair) died in 1870 and was buried at Warrnambool.

Der Ramah,

Many thanks for the reply,
my John McLeod did come from Raasay and his 1st wife was Catherine, ( her children were Margaret, Torquil, Christy)  however his 2nd wife was Elizabeth.

My John McLeod died at Upper Fearns estate on 5/6/1851 on the Isle of Raasay (this is taken from the estate census records on Raasay) before his children came to Australia aboard the Ticonderoga in 1852.

His 2nd wife Elizabeth (Bess) McLeod   died Jan 1849). She is the mother of the youngest five - Alexander Ann Niel Catherine and Catherine.

The eight siblings survived the journey and I can account for all the girls in the family, but no luck with the boys, Torquil, Alexander and Niel.   :'(

I do wish your Niel was mine, but alas  :( I am fairly certain he is a different Niel McLeod.
Yes, there were quite a few McLeod's on the Ticonderoga, and I would be great if we could touch base, as I have searched extensively for the missing McLeod brothers with no luck, so far. Who knows they will be tucked away somewhere:)

Posting this as I feel it is the death of one of the people mentioned in an earier thread.

Quote
1889 #25237  Jno Torquil MCLEOD, father Donald MCLEOD, mother Rachel NEALE, PURNIM,

In NSW deaths:
27962 for 1944 in Taree: JOHN TORQUIL MCLEOD parents DONALD and MARGARET.
Right name and father but mother's name is different but this is not rare.

modifying to add
Also in NSW and 1878 death at GUNDAGAI for a 35 yo  Neil McLeod no 6239
no parents names given. Age a bit out but if no one really knew him that is understandable.

A few possible NSW deaths  for Alexander too in similar geographial locations but no paretns details to confirm

regards

Robyn

Dalet,
No aargument from me. The 1947 death was registerd as DONALD John Torquil Mcleod #17118 parents Donald Mcleaod and Rchael Neal aged 57 so born
Quote
Purnin 1889 rego 25237
as mentioned earlier on registered  as John without the Donald.

Family of Donald and Rachel MCleod: John Torquil 1889, Janet 1893, Margaret Isabella 1897, Alex 1900

Has anyone claimed connection to TORQUIL Mcleod aged 83 who died in Royal Park in 1939 #1103 parents John Mcleod and Nellie McLennan? est dob 1856.

Is he the same one who was born 1857 in Warrnambool to John and Margaret?

Also yet to find out where
Quote
27962 for 1944 in Taree: JOHN TORQUIL MCLEOD parents DONALD and MARGARET.

this man fits in. There are no NSW births for this man nor for the Edward Torquil MCleod died 1971 aged70 (born c1901)

So Roby's mystery remains what happend to the boys, did they return to Scotland? Could they have gone to NZ?

There are certainly several Alexanders and Neils in the deaths whose ages would be close, pity there is no parents information in the NZ index.

Scotland's people has be searched too I suspect.

modified to add
I have also looked at what I can find for the couple Torquil Mcleod and Margaret MCLeod who married in 1893 (see earlier thread) and is he the one born in Warrnambool?

Found registrations for Mary Ann Christina 1895 and John Alexander1896 (no deaths for them) and a1975 death #8627 aged 77 for Marie Margaret A (Warick) in Bendigo. (no birth found yet) b c 1898. could it possibly be Mary Ann Christina using another name as the 1928 marriage to John LEask Warwick has heras Marie Ann/ Maria Ann

regards

Robyn

Thank you to everyone for the interesting discussion re: my missing McLeod Bros.
I will certainly check  out Scotlands People, but these people were very poor as they were cleared from the highlands, I am wondering  would they have money to go back ???

NZ is an option or other states of Aus, but it seems they did not stay in Vic or even go to NSW, the sisters settled near the Vic/NSW border so this was an option, but it seems that they ALL went somewhere either together or separately as no record has been found after they arrived safely in 1852.

Once again thank you to all the mystery continues  :'(

Well  I had a look at WA &QLD online BDM and cemetery records without success.

Looked also at SA burials without finding anyone but I don't have access to a BDM index at all but it could be intersting as the TAS colonial listings seem to have arrived from ther, though one died aged 1 year.
Perhaps someone else may be able to help out with SA.

Tried shipping records:
http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/
http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=42
http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/index/immigration.asp
had no luck

best wishes

Robyn
