MIs, St Michael's, Farnley, Leeds
« on: Thursday 03 December 09 14:04 GMT (UK) »
Please does anyone know if the monumental inscriptions for St Michael's church in Farnley near Leeds have been recorded?

Thanks,

Lesley

Do you mean Farnley near Otley?
I can't find any other All Saints.

Brian-

Thank you for your reply.

It's the Farnley 4 miles from Leeds. I thought it was All Saints, but having just looked it up, I see it doesn't have any particular dedication, but is just 'Farnley Church'.

Lesley

Is it St Michael's that you want?

Thank you, Galium

I'm not sure if it's St Michael's or not. I was looking at the reference to the church in Colin Blanshard Withers' 'Yorkshire Parish Registers' (but my eye had wandered down the page and and attached Featherstone's 'All Saints' mistakenly to Farnley.)
All I know is it's the Farnley four miles west of Leeds.
The inscription I am seeking is for a Jane GLEDHILL, buried 24th September 1844

regards,
Lesley

The website in the link also has burials - and they include Jane Gledhill, so it looks like the right church.  It may be that there was no memorial stone, or it no longer exists/is illegible.

This is the home page for the website:

there may be some way of contacting them with an enquiry.

Thanks again, Galium.

It's definitely St Michael's, and there is a contemporary record of a tombstone being ordered (from a Thomas Holdsworth), but it may not be still there or still legible.

The link you gave me is a very useful website; unfortunately I can't get the email link to work for me, but as there are just a few MIs listed on the site, it doesn't look as though the whole churchyard has been recorded.
Thanks again,

Regarding the memorial inscriptions.
One gentleman was responsible for gathering the photographic information, sadly he died earlier this year.
So unless anyone fancies going round the graveyards with a camera to photograph headstones, this facility will cease.
(The records that you see on calverley info are taken directly from parish records by volunteers before being submitted to the website.)
