Civil Birth Records
« on: Wednesday 02 December 09 17:06 GMT (UK) »
How accurate are the familysearch civil registration records? I have a civil birth record for Owen Crudden born fivemiletown Tyrone on 02/08/1868 obtained from the pay to view site.
I have been looking for this from the links that some of you have kindly given for the Irish civil registrations and cannot find him.
My real interest is in his mother named as Norella Hanna who may be my father's sister. My grandfather was Michael Hannon or Hanna and Norella's children were Godparents to some of Michael's children subsequently in Tyldesley Lancs.
They are all living cheek by jowl in Tyldesley in the 1881 census. I cannot find marriage records for my grandparents who if married would have been married by 1878. My grandmother Mary Anne Maguire says on the 1911 census that she came from Belfast. Any thoughts? :-\

Could you explain exactly what birth record you are having trouble finding in civil index so we could try to help?

Hi,
I have found a Thomas Owen Crudden born to Henry Crudden and Norella Hanna 12 Aug 1871 on the Emerald ancestor site. Checking on the parent search facility on the IGI section of Family search I found two other children for this couple, Jane Anne born 24 Nov 1865 inBrookeborough co. Fermanagh and Owen on 2 Aug 1868 in Co. Tyrone.

Regards
Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

Thanks, I found the three children mentioned but could not find the older siblings. that is Mary crudden or Mary Anne Crudden born about 1866 in County Tyrone or Fermanagh, Catherine Crudden born about 1871 in either Tyrone or Fermanagh.
My main interest is in their mother Norella hanna, in some of the census,s she calls herself Mary in 1901 she calls herself Norah Ella. I am trying to find a marriage for Norah and Henry Crudden which would have been in the 1860,s. I think she may be my Grandfather Michael Hannan's sister.Catherine Crudden was Godmother to some of Michael's children. Michael was born about 1854 and was ? married to Mary Anne Maguire. I cannot find a marriage for them.

Civil registration of Catholic marriages began in 1864 so if Henry and Norah were married in a Catholic ceremony before 1864 they wouldn't appear in the index and you have to search for church records. If it was a non-Catholic ceremony (including Registry Office) which took place after 1845 it should be in the index.

Since Michael Hannon was born c1854 his marriage should certainly be in the index but problem might be spelling in index/original register. (hint: search for Maguire as maguire and m'guire (no 'c').

Irish Family History Foundation is another pay-per-view site that has indexed many Catholic church records -- including as far back late 1700s in County Tyrone. They also have civil record indexes and some Church of Ireland and Presbyterian indexes.

http://tyrone.brsgenealogy.com/

Their record-access costs less than Emerald Ancestors; I often use E.A. and LDS Search Pilot for basic searches and then order the identified records through IFHF. You can choose a county and search available records by county, or search their entire collection of Ireland databases without a specific county. You get a typed abstract which sometimes has errors, but if it's a name and person of interest, you can order a copy of the original handwritten certificate from the GRO in Dublin or Roscommon or a branch office.

Through IFHF, you can search for Michael Hannon/Hanna's marriage c. 1875-1878 as well as Henry Crudden's (c. 1855-1865?), and also search for their brides' names and other records.

Depending on what you may know about Henry CRUDDEN, I'd also search for him as "McCrudden" and "M'Crudden." Griffith's Valuation shows more individuals named "Mc"+ and "M"+Crudden (including a "Henry" in Co. Down) than as plain "Crudden." Your Henry's family might have dropped the prefix at some point in time -- going back to a more ancient ancestral name, though I doubt they'd have thought of it that way!

Good luck with your search,
Annie
