MARTIN Thomas and Lydia from Suffolk England
« on: Wednesday 02 December 09 08:26 GMT (UK) »
Hello to everyone and Merry Christmas  :)
Like other people I'm on the search for lost family ancestors.
I have been researching in the name of MARTIN Thomas  married to Lydia SKIPPON 13Th October 1835 at Beccles Suffolk England .I have attached their wedding certificate if this can help out .
I have nothing else to go on because I never knew anything of my ggg grandfather until now there is information in the Australian section under Clara Emma Catherine MARTIN.Cando was very helpfull to my history gathering valuable information to my ancestors here in Australia. Now it time to head over to where our genetic genes started  and hopefully learn all about what makes us who we are today in December 2009. can any one help me to find my descendant's?

Hi Wendy1

Looks as if Thomas Martin was considerably older than Lydia.

1851 Census - West Rudham, Norfolk

Thomas Martin    70     Curate of West Rudham   b. Colkirk, Norfolk
Lydia Martin        48                                              b. Fakenham, Norfolk
Lydia Martin   dau.   21                                                    ditto
Arthur Martin  son    15                                         b. Saxmundham, Suffolk
Henry Martin   son    13                                              ditto
Horace Martin  son    12                                              ditto
Matilda Melton  serv.   15    House servant

ref. HO107 - 1827 - 582 - 11

Don't know if the dau. Lydia bc.1830 was Thomas' from a previous marriage  or, as her birthplace is same as mothers, whether she was just Lydia's daughter.

Arthur's baptism is on the IGI as 26/7/1836 but just says Suffolk - however, from the census above this would appear to be at Saxmundham.

I note on 1841 Census that Lydia is alone with the children.   Thomas seems to be back in his birthplace - Colkirk - where he is shown as Clerk (ref.HO107 - 778 - 5 - 12 - 19).

FreeReg shows:

Thomas bp.22/12/1775 Colkirk (d.1775-1780)
Frances bp.10/11/1777 Colkirk
*Thomas bp.31/3/1780 Colkirk
Susanna bp.19/5/1782 - children of Thomas Martin and Catherine Jones.

They married 3/10/1770 Fakenham, Norfolk.

Lydia Skippen bp.2/8/1803 Baptist, Fakenham, Norfolk dau. of Thomas and Sarah.

Scopes (One-Name Study - Worldwide)
Suffolk - Grist, Knights, Bullenthorpe, Watcham
Scotland - Spence, Horne, Cowan, Moffat
London -  Monk

Hi and welcome Annette7
the spelling for Lydia  last name is SKIPPON, you do have infomatiom that works with  CandoS,
Looking at the Lydia persons it looks to me that 1st Lydia SKIPPON  married Thomas MARTIN seperated or mybe work reasons reunited, he was older,2ND Lydia MARTIN daughter of thomas and mother Lydia.
:D confusion sets in now over the thomas names as well

It looks to me that is the reason Thomas was older?
Lydia must of been in his middle ages leaves me to wonder who Thomas was married to before Lydia I need to reed back in the notes to see if it is there  in the dates if thay line up  date.
Thank you for your help it is very much appreciated .

Wendy,

In the Ipswich Journal, dated Saturday, September 27, 1862, there is a BMD announcement for the death of Lydia Martin.

On the 19th inst, at Kirkley, Lydia, only daughter of the late Rev. Thomas Martin, formerly of West Rudham, Norfolk aged 32 years.

Wendy

It would appear that Thomas Martin's father was also a member of the clergy:

Ipswich Journal: Saturday, March 15, 1806

Yesterday, s’ennight, died after a long affliction, Mrs. Martin, wife of the Rev. Thomas Martin of Colkirk, near Fakenham, Norfolk.

Saturday, January 30, 1836:
16th inst, at the parsonage House, Botley, after a union of 40 years and in her 63rd year of her age, Elizabeth, wife of Richard Barker MA,  rector and daughter of the late Rev. Thomas Martin, rector of Colkirk cum Stibbard, in the county of Norfolk.

Thomas's father appears to have died between 1806 and 1836-so far can't find his death.
