Hi

There were there were three Woolnough male births registered in the London area in 1877

Births Sep 1877
Woolnough  Charles William A     Kensington  1a 104
Woolnough  Edwin Algar     Marylebone  1a 511
Births Dec 1877
WOOLNOUGH  Frederick     Mile End  1c 572

another eight in 1876 and another four in 1878.

London had a population of over 3 million in 1871 and growing fast so there will always be quite a few people with the same surname found in such a large city.

Regards

Valda

I think he was a Charles Woolnough and was a milkman. His first wife died and he married a lady with the surname Weale. He had children during his first marriage and one child by his second. She was Gwendoline Woolnough and was my birth mother.

Hi Chrissue

There is a Charles showing in the London area in the 1901 census that might fit, but not London born. Family living in Camberwell:

Chas Wm Woolnough 23, milk carrier b. Broom, Suffolk
Louisa Woolnough 24 b. Peckham, London
Charles Woolnough 3 months b. Dulwich, London

RG13; Piece: 503; Folio: 35; Page: 15

I think at least one of Charles' marriages show on the parish registers:

There is a parish register entry for a Charles William Woolnough marrying an Eliza Wheal on 2 May 1920 at Saint Paul, Kensington, where he shows as a widower, aged 48. Occupation is that of a milk carrier. Father William is down as deceased. Eliza, aged 37, a spinster. Father down as Cornelius, a butcher by trade. Father does not show as deceased (although this is not always something to be relied on!)

On FreeBmd, there is possible entry for first marriage:

Marriages 4th Qrt 1899
Rushton Louisa Elizabeth M and on the same page, Woolnough Charles William    - Camberwell 1d   1570

Possible entry for Charles with family in 1891 (The family show in Mitcham in 1881):

William Woolnough 46, gardener b. Cratfield, Suffolk
Maria Woolnough 39 b. Somerleyton, Suffolk
Charles Woolnough 13, b. Broom Suffolk
Ada Woolnough 10, b. Mitcham, Surrey
Hertzibah Woolnough 2 b. Mitcham, Surrey

The family show in Camberwell - RG12; Piece: 472; Folio 66; Page 65

Possible entry for Charles' birth:

Births 2nd Qrt 1877
Woolnough Charles William - Hartismere 4a  617

And likely entry for parents' marriage:

Marriages 3rd Qrt 1876
Woolnough, William Henry and Duncan, Maria Rebecca   - Hartismere 4a 847

A little bit on Eliza Wheal  :)

Her parents' marriage shows on 16 May 1880 at Saint Thomas, Stepney:

Corneall Wheal, 33, butcher. Father James, a Farm labourer.
Eliza Powis, 31. Father Thomas, a coal whipper

Eliza's birth I think is this one:

Births 1st Qrt 1883
WHEAL Eliza - St. Saviour 1d   158

Eliza's baptism shows on 1 Mar 1885 at Saint Stephen, Walworth Common, Southwark.

Failing miserably to find them on the censuses though  :-\
