Hi, Wonder if anyone can help. In one of my trees I have a marriage certificate for a Ann Simpson married to William Slingsby in Sheffield 1860. Her father is named as Thomas Simpson a scale cutter. Thinking to trace anne simpsons family I sent for her birth certificate which has just arrived. This is where the mystery starts. Her mothers name is given as Mary Ann Simpson but the name, and occupation of the father has got a line through it. Making me think that she was illigitimate. The date was may 1839. I can only think that her mother and father when they eventually married both had the same surname. But looking through the marriages on free bmd from 1939 onwards cant find a marriage for them. I found a marriage for a Mary Ann Simpson and a Thomas Anderson in Knaresbrough in 1939 but obvously that can,t be them. Does anyone have any other explanation for this? Many thanks Pat

Hope this makes sense.
