Census lookups please: JohnMcKenzie Duncan bon 1863
« on: Monday 30 November 09 10:43 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find this gentleman for a friend's brickwall. We assume we are looking for an Ontario census record, but this is not certain.

I found a John M. Duncan in Artemesia Township on the 1881 Family Search Census, but need to try to confirm this is the right family, as the date of birth is given as 1865.

I know nothing about Canadian genealogy, can births be looked up too?

John McKenzie Duncan, married Isabella Webster.  John lived in Artemesia.

Explains a bit about Ontario births:

In case they stayed in Canada:

There is a John McKenzie Duncan, buried in Flesherton Cemetery.  Do not see an Isabella in the same cemetery.

HMM. I wonder if Isabella died very shortly after the marriage? I have him marrying a Susan Turner (also a widow) in 1888. Of course this could be wrong (this is from my friend's research).  This is the same man as on the census, of that I am sure.

From this link you can search the 1881 and 1891 Canadian census.  In Artemesia Township, Grey County enumerated under McKenzie Duncan with wife Susan and children George, Joseph, Leona and stepson John Sloan.

John McKenzie Duncan s/o John and Eliza Duncan married Susan Sloan d/o Campbell and Lucy Turner married Sept 25, 1888 in Artemesia Township.  One witness was Joseph Duncan.    At John McKenzie's marriage to Isabella one of the witnesses was J.H. Duncan.

There is a death for John McKenzie Duncan showing birth of Oct 7, 1862 Artemesia and death Nov 12, 1909 at 47 years, 1 month 5 days.  His parents were given as John Duncan b. Ireland and Christian name left blank McKenzie b. Canada.  Frank W. Duncan of Flesherton was the informant.
There is a birth of Frank Willford Duncan to John McKendrie Duncan and Susan Turner 20 July 1891.
There is also a Susan Duncan (Turner) buried in Flesherton cemetery.

Finding official proof of birth in the 1860s is difficult.  Sometimes you can find baptismal transcriptions online but they are hit and miss for areas of Ontario.  Perhaps the death record would help to tie the 1881 census record into your research.  I wouldn't be concerned about the year of birth discrepancy on census records as they can be off by a decade sometimes.

Hi there,

I have a book about the history of Artemesia area (my family was also from the area) and I believe I have your fellow here mentioned by name.

Briefly - John McKenzie Duncan born in Artemesia township 1862, married Isabel Webster in 1885. His father John Duncan born 1819 of Scottish and Irish descent.

There is a fairly decent blurb here on the family, send me a pm if you'd like more.

Oh! I thought the name sounded familiar so I just had a closer look and it looks like the brother of your man married one of my ancestors :)

In fact I just remembered you can view a digital copy of the book online here:
http://www.ourroots.ca/
(Search for the book called Split Rail Country)

The family is on page 139. Once you locate the book, you can browse it by page using the "Go To Page" box on the right or use the search box just under it.... you will likely find other mentions of the name Duncan using the text search.
