Hi Diddy

The 1841 Census features just one John and Jane Pye in Northumberland for this time frame and this indicates that John was bc.1781 (as rounded down, between 1777 and 1781).

I note on the IGI that Mitford records have been extracted and the only John Pye baptised in 1770's was John Pye bp.20/5/1779, son of John and Mary.   This would seem to fit with the John on the census.   Have you considered this?
If the c.1772 date has come from his age at his death, an awful lot of people seemed to get older as they aged as I've found on many occasions.

Diddy
I have just found this thread and can throw some light on the Pye family going back a few more generations.  A summary follows.

As has been already stated, John Pye (20 May 1779) married Jane Turnbull at Newburn 26 May 1801.

His parents were John Pye (15 Sept 1741, Seghill) who married Mary Pye (c1749) 15 May 1776 at Wallsend.  They died 22 March 1813 and 14 July 1803 respectively at Seghill.

His parents were James Pye (14 Jan 1709/10 at Stannington) who married Mary Dixon 28 Apr 1739 at Five Mile Bridge, Longbenton.  Buried 19 May 1796 and 12 Jan 1794 at Earsdon having died at Seghill.

His parents were John Pye and Margaret Reedhead married 3 June 1701 at Ponteland.  He was buried 10 Oct 1751 at Stannington.

He appears to be one of the sons of Ralph Pye and unknown Elizabeth.  They died 1729 and 1719 at Ponteland.  The name Ralph is handed down the generations.  This particular part of the family has not been definitely confirmed.

I have more information on these people as I am descended from one of the sons of John and Mary Pye myself.  Much of this information has come from two other Pye researchers.
