does anybody know whereabouts Kellys Buildings, Murray Place. Stotts Building and Isle Place were in Ancoats?  They sound like tenements but as the place has been rebuilt I can't find even a general location.  I had a lot of family living in this area in the 19th century and would love to know where they were.

Hello,
welcome to rootschat.
I've just tried typing a few of the street names in 1881 census and eventually have come up with District 19, Ancoats.

The description of the district has:
"right side of Butler Street to Ravald  ???Street including Iles street, Murray Street, Murray Court, Rowley Court , Stotts and Kellys Buildings"

also mentions Lloyd Street

hope this helps

Welcome to rootschat Lancashire  :D

Butler St has survived so you can find the approx location on google maps (Butler St, Manchester M4). Murray St was just above Butler St, running parallel to Butler St.

On this link to 1874 map of Manchester (courtesy of Rootschatter Orinoco), click the map marked "NE" around the large red "E". It will zoom to the Oldham Rd area and you should see Butler St with Murray St next to it.

thanks to everyone who replied the information was great.  It fits with everything I know as my grandfather lived on woodward street and my great great grandfather on blossom street in the 1800s.
