northern irish soldiers in WW1
« on: Friday 27 November 09 20:12 GMT (UK) »
Hello there. my grandad James McElhill (McEnhill) fought in WW1, he was staff sergeant and was stationed in India for a time , he was gassed at some point and spent time in a hospital in england.I have no idea what regiment he belonged to so if any one would have any info or tell me where i could look to get some info on him that would be great. He did not die in the war. Thanks so much

Was his dad called Hugh and came from Tatty Keel Omagh Co Tyrone?

If so his pension record survives...This guy was discharged and served in India he was Royal Field artillery and a pre war soldier.
he suffered from Nephritris which was common with gas poisoned soldiers so sounds promising??

Ady :)

Just in case you haven't seen 1911 census- looks like James (occupation- Pension Royal Artillery), father Hugh, etc. here-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tyrone/Clanabogan/Tattykeel__Rogers_/874078/

IGI (www.familysearch.org) has a James McElhill, son of Hugh & Catherine (McGale), birth in 1865 (and also a daughter Margaret Jane 1870).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Looks like he was a national reservist recalled in 1914
His medical history is still intact may tell a story or two
Entitled to 1914 star british war and victory medals and a silver war badge

Hope this helps

Ady

If the James McEnhill, that sarahmck refers to, was the son of Hugh McEnhill(McElhill) and Mary Stars, then he was a half brother to my Grandfather, Edward.
