  hELLO ALL. dOES ANYONE KNOW OF MASS EXODUS (i SAY MASS IN A TONGUE IN CHEEK EXPRESSION ) Im looking for Thomas Newman who may have done a bunk to either USA or Australia for the gold rush around 1864 ,would there be any newspaper reorts about this anywhere, Thomas was my great grandfather born in Dumbleton in 1838 wed Emma Gibble in 1858 (got marriage cert) had 3 children up to 1863 ,then after that can find no further record of him, story goes that he went out one day and never returned ,, Help Please

Somebody might have access to passenger lists and do a search for you?  or you could pay for a month membership and search yourself, it depends on how keen you are to know?  You could try the Australian boards etc.  Fred

A relative of my wife's was involved in a gold rush in New Zealand. I found his details in an on line newspaper record from New Zealand. Suggest you Google New Zealand papers on line or similar.

I'm researching the New Zealand gold rushes as part of my doctoral dissertation and am currently tracking down letters, diaries, and memoirs from miners held in private hands.  Do you have any firsthand accounts by your ancestor, which you'd be willing to let me take a look at.  In exchange, I'd be more than happy to send your way any info I might find about him.  I have copies of around 10,000 mining rights, as well as several administrative sources that list miners, including business and mining institute ledgers, as well as library lending records and the like.  I can be reached at ^(*)

The southern Australian gold rush was pretty much over by the 1860s, but in 1865 gold was discovered in north Queensland, so that may be a place to look...

Have you tried searching passenger lists into Australia around that time?

I'm actually looking into the New Zealand rushes, which began with Otago in 1861 immediately after the Victorian rushes.  Many thanks anyway!

301djd43, Sorry I can't help on that matter, have no original information of any type. His name was John Jackson Hutchinson, b1832 Clayton nr Doncaster, married 19.3.1867 Invercargill NZ, died Melbourne Australia c1910. I think there is a thread on this site about him.
