Grave Photo - Rock Cemetary
« on: Thursday 26 November 09 23:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I wondered whether someone may be able to take a photo for me of the following family grave at Rock Church Cemetary, Nottingham, assuming that there is a headstone!

William Whittley - died 24th April 1874
Lavinia Sarah Whittley - died 09th April 1879
Also buried with Arthur Sulley Whittley and Hannah Whittley
Grave no 1369 - Rock Church Cemetary, Nottingham

I'm not sure how easy it would be to find although i'm hoping someone may be able to help.

Thanks in advance

TB

Hi i went a walk round this Cemetary in  September and took some photos of outstanding grave stones ,(monuments) its not going to be easy  because its quite full ,   there is paths to walk on but  not among the graves ,
It would make it easier if  you knew they had a grave stone ,    and which section ,

Hi

Thank-you for your message.

Unfortunately i am not familiar at all with this graveyard as i live outside of the area.  Does someone have a plan or a resource to identify the location from the grave no 1369 to assist me?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Notts family history society will be bringing out a CD of all the Rock gravestone in the near future, so that should help you find out if in fact there is a gravestone, it should also pinpoint where in the grave yard it is.  The grave yard is huge, and as SKy1 pointed out, near impossible just to stumble across the one needed!

Best wishes,

Thanks for the note.

I had tried the Council previously to see if they could help as i had the grave number - but not surprisingly they were not inclined to help.

I can't believe that they don't have a grave plan....

Hopefully someone will be able to help soon when that reference cd is released.

Regards

The Councils are generally a bit vague because they seem to have inherited grave yards as they have become full.

The original owners of many grave yards were private companies, who were in it to make a good business.  Once the grave yard is full their interest seems to fade, and then the councils are more or less in a position of no option, they have had to take over the up keep, but consequently the records are not what they should be.

The Rock for instance has had so many later graves squeezed in between the earlier original burials - it is chaotic to put it mildly!

Best wishes,

There may well be no gravestone.  I have family members buried there, and after a personal visit by a close relative, a small wooden cross was placed at the burial site so tht he could photograph it.

This web site may be of some help: http://www.gravestonephotos.com/public/findfamily.php?name=whittley

Thanks all

It would seem that at present there is no easy solution.

I believe that there may be a stone in this instance as whilst the family were not particulaly well off they did appear to have some money.  The last person to be interred was in 1922 so i am hoping that any outstanding details on a marker may have been 'topped up' at that time, unless a marker was already present.

Looks like we will have to wait for the monumental inscriptions CD.  Hope it is not too long coming!

Hi Truebrit,

One of my ancestors is buried there - and his grave number is 1989. I found him in the Laburnham section of the cemetary.

I dont know whether this will help you!!?

A plan is available of the different sections on the link below!

Areas: Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire.

Main Names: Wood, Taylor, Beckworth, Whysall, Hull [and many others when I go off on a tangent!! lol]
