Steptoe's of Ealing (Brentford) England
« on: Friday 11 March 05 23:42 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find any living relatives from the other lines (since Paul Richard's family are all now deceased). They are Steptoe's of Uxbridge/Ealing, England
(Registered in Brentford, Middlesex).

Going back:-

Paul Richard (b.Ealing) is the
son of Frank Meuross Steptoe (b.1909, Ealing -1991) & Mabel (nee Chapman) is the
son of James Meuross Steptoe (b.1873, Ealing) & Elizabeth (nee Withers) is the
son of Henry Steptoe (b.1843,  Uxbridge) & Elizabeth (nee Priest) is the
son of James Steptoe (b.~1802, Middlesex) & Jane Meuross (b.~1805, Scotland?) is the
son of Thomas Steptoe (b.?, Hillingdon) & Mary Pitman (b.?, Hillingdon).

Thomas & Mary had 4 sons and 4 daughters; John (married Phoebe and had daughter Mary Ann); Sarah (married David Neale); James (married Jane Meuross and had 4 children).

James and Jane's children - daughter Mary Jane (married James Adams and had 6 sons); Henry (married Elizabeth Pendry Priest and had 6 sons all of Ealing).

James M. and Elizabeth J. had one son Frank M. (married Mabel Chapman and they too only had one son).

Remember Meuross is often recorded incorrectly as Mewross, Menrose, Menrofs and even Mewcross!

Anything will be welcomed! :)

Welcome Steptoe :)

Are you just wanting to connect with people researching the same line as you, or would you like some help with census data and other records?

If you would like some help, and have some specific needs - 1871 census or help in locating bmd's for example, then do feel free to ask on the Middlesex Lookups requests board.  There are a lot of kind and friendly people here on RootsChat who would be delighted to help you.

Rick :)

Before my marriage my family name was Meuross.  I happened upon your message about the Steptoes of Ealing quite by chance but have to tell you that although I know (or thought I knew) quite a lot about the Meuross family of Uxbridge Henry is a new one to me!  I do have evidence of an entry from the 1851 census for Denham for a Henry Meuross lodging in Harefield.  This Henry gave his age as 23 indicating that he was born about 1828.  The Meuross family in which i have a particular interest were living in Uxbridge at the time of the 1851 Census - Thomas Meuross who was head of the household at this time was born in Edinburgh in 1808.  He married Mary Turner in Denham Parish Church in December 1836.

A George Mewcross was baptised in August 1797 at St Margaret's Parish Church in Harefield - there are variant spellings of the Meuross name, one being Mewross, so it is not beyond the imagination that Mewcross is a corruption of Mewross or Meuross.  I've thought for some time that there were other Meuross family links with the Uxbridge area besides those of Thomas Meuross and Mary Turner and I think that your request for information may prove this.  There was also another Meuross family living in High Wycombe between 1833 and 1898 and there seems to be some tantalizing connections between them and the Uxbridge family.

I hope this is of interest to you and not too long!  I have a lot more information about the Meuross family in Uxbridge from about 1836 to approximately 1870.

I have a copy of a birth certificate for Mary Jane Steptoe, born 5th December 1847 in Uxbridge. Her parents were James Steptoe, servant & Jane Steptoe (formely Meuross)

In the 1851 census James (49, born Middlesex & Jane (42, born Denham) with sons James (9). Henry (8), Frank (6) & Mary Jane (3) were living at Besfours Yard (?) in or near the High Street, Uxbridge Town.

Mary Jane Steptoe married James Adams (born in Sherbourne, Dorset in 1844). They had children born in Dorset, Uxbridge Frant, where they finally settled.

MJS & James Adams were my great grandparents.

Dear Brian,
Thank you so much for your message about Jane Meuross.  I am very interested indeed to know that in the 1851 census she gave her place of birth as Denham - she seems to have stated elsewhere that she was born in Scotland.  Perhaps she was creative with the truth or may be there were two Jane Meuross' - however, the one who interests me is certainly the Jane Meuross who married James Steptoe.  I have a copy of their marriage certificate - if you'd like me to e-mail you a copy.  What most interests me is that your information establishes another Meuross family link with Uxbridge.

You may be interested to know that Uxbrdige appeared to have lots of "Yards" along the High Street in the 1850's to 1870's.  The one to which you refer may be "Beasley's Yard."  This can still be seen in Uxbridge and is the site of the "Old Meeting" House - a congregationalist church where my great grandfather was married.

Thank you again for bothering to let me have this information.  If my relative, Thomas Meuross was related to Jane Meuross then I think that could make us distant relatives!

Dear Molly

Thank you for your reply.

I would be very pleased to receive the marriage certificate by email.

I have a birth certificate for Mary Jane the daughter of James & Jane Steptoe although I am unable which I should be able to scan at work next week.

Presumably you are descended from the Meuross's of Windsor. The only other one I've found was in the Sydney telephone directory.

Regards

Brian

Hello Brian,
Yes, I am descended from the Meuross' from Windsor.  My father was one of the "six Meuross boys" two of whom were "compulsory" migrants to Australia in the 1920's.  The entry for Meuross in the Sydney telephone book is for my cousin.  The story of the Windsor Meuross family is certainly very poignant.

I will do my best to send you a copy of the marriage certificate.  I feel rather incompetent with my scanner and not always any more efficient with e-mail either so please be patient!
Regards,
Molly

Hallo Steptoe,  Have just seen your message re Steptoes of Ealing.  Very interested as I am descended from one Thomas Meuross, brother of Jane and children of Robert and Mary.  Thomas was born in Edinburgh and Jane was born in Scotland but could never tell from where.

Regards

You might like to know that Jane stated her place of birth in Scotland as the 1841, 1861 and 1871 Census returns.  1841 had to state where if Scotland.  She was living with James in the High Street.  Reference HO107/0656/6/~F4  CD2 H107_656.pdf p.160
