BURGESS family, Essex & Suffolk
« on: Friday 11 March 05 23:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Is anyone out there researching the Burgess family, they were living in Hadstock, Essex, but the old Burgesses in the Village are born in Littlebury, Essex.  On checking William Burgess was born Wilby, Suffolk about 1780 and his wife Ann is from Worlingworth, Suffolk.

I am trying to find their marriage and William's baptism.
Also George Burgess married Elizabeth Bush in Hadstock and looking at the various census the village is full of people with the surname Bush.
Does anyone have a connection?
Linda

In 1781   I've got a Eures (or Eunice) Burgess whom married a John Brooks 13 JUN 1781 Of, Bury Saint Edmunds, Suffolk, England.
(Bury Saint Edmunds is written as in Suffolk at that time)
They had son's Thomas Brook(e)s 1788 & Henry 1794.

I'll have a look about for Burgess names (and report back) as I've no idea whom Eures faily were - so you never know :)

Hi Linda

I was generally surfing for Hadstock information and found your post at Rootschat.  I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that you were tracing the Burgess family there, as we have been doing the same for some time.

During our researching at the Ipswich Record Office we found that William Burgess married Ann Moyse in the parish of Stradbroke (Suffolk) on 3rd March 1812.

We also found a baptism record for a William Burgess (son of Robert and Mary) in Wilby dated 17 April 1785. There are many other children of this marriage and the records indicate that Mary was formerly Mary Clarke.

George and Elizabeth Sarah Burgess are my husband's Great Grandparents. They were married at Hadstock on 4th Aug 1879.  Their marriage certificate states her father was James Bush (a labourer).  He appears on the Hadstock 1851 census aged 29 with his wife Mary and son William (aged 1).  On the 1861 census Mary is a widow and living in Hadstock with several of her children including Elizabeth who is aged 3.

We have other Burgess information if this helps.  Are you a Burgess too?

Hi Linda,
I don't know if this is the same family, but my maternal grandfather was the Rev Henry Norman Burgess (1876-1955), born in Oldham, Middleton (near Manchester) and his parents were the Rev William Burgess and Sarah Ann Burgess (1842-1907). Sarah died in Bury St Edmunds, which makes me think that William's last parish may have been there.
Best wishes,
Jane Cooper (nee Bygott)
