David CRAMOND - Beginner seeks advice- COMPLETE
« on: Wednesday 25 November 09 12:31 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

I am quite new to the family history business, and have quickly reached a road block (hopefully not a dead end).

Caroline LOW (b. 1907, canvas weaver) and David CRAMOND (electrician), both of Arbroath, have a child in 1925, but are nae married.  Caroline later (1928) marries George Forsyth (bank teller of Dundee).

Without a marriage certificate including David Cramond I have no other details about him, and even less clue of where to look next.  I have spent a few credits at ScotlandsPeople and found 3 likely candidates born in Arbroath / St Vigeans in 1890; 1895; and 1906 - but which one is 'mine' (if any of these) is beyond me.

A search on SP does not show any David Cramond age 0-15 years in Arbroath for the 1901 Census; but 2 for Angus as a whole.  For the moment I'm preserving my pennies.

I'm on the other side of the world and have no family to ask, and in any case I doubt there are any alive who would know the answer.  That said, there is a family 'story' that David Cramond later emigrated to Canada (but that's hardly narrowing the field).

Any suggestions about where to look next; or advice from more experienced hands that I should stop wasting my time (!) would be much appreciated.

My thanks for reading this post.

Hi Ian

Welcome to Rootschat.  You are quite right in that David Cramond did indeed go to Canada.   According to Canadian Passenger lists on findmypast:

David Cramond   aged 20 - from Arbroath, Electrician - left from Glasgow for Quebec on 25/4/1926 on the 'Letitia'.   He was shown as going to a friend - Mrs. Margt. Keith, Military Hospital, St. Anne de Belleroue, Quebec.   His father is shown as Mr. John Cramond, 26 Howard Street, Arbroath.

Sounds like it might be the one you found b.1906.   You should be able to look at that birth certificate to see if it confirms his father was a John.

Annette - thank you so much; you're a champion.

Howard Street rings a bell (I'll need to check) - and obviously cross-reference the birth certificate.

Thanks again.

Annette - just letting you know that your work was spot on.

David Anderson Reith CRAMOND was born in 1906 to John and Helen (Reith) of Howard Street, Arbroath.

Again, my thanks.

Hi Ian

Glad to know it was the right one and that this was one 'family story' that was correct.

Good luck with your further research.

Hi Ian,

I have just logged on and found your message - my name is William Cramond and the David Cramond you are searching for is my uncle.

My father was William Eaton Cramond, and his father was John Cramond, who was also David's father.

John Cramond was married to Helen Dundas Reith they had 7 children:-
Betsy Dundas Cramond, David Anderson Reith Cramond, Edwin Cramond, John Dempster Cramond, Edith Cramond, Sidney Cramond, and my father William Eaton Cramond.
They all were born in 26 Howard Street, Arbroath.

You are correct that he went to Canada - what happened to him after that I do not know.

My wife did a geneology course and has traced back my fathers side of the family to 1811 and have it on hard copy.   I look forward to hearing from you.

What relationship are you to David Cramond?

Regards,  Bill Cramond

Just found on Ancestry the following:

David Cramond, electrician, aged 24, son of John Cramond and Helen Keith, married Ann Bell Shaw Reid, nurse, aged 21 at the United Church, St. Paul, Montreal, Quebec on 27/3/1931.

Ann Reid Cramond, daughter of above couple, was born 23/6/1936 and bp.8/8/1936 at United Church, Chalmers, Quebec - their address looks like 5156 Verdun Avenue, Verdun, Quebec (or Uerdun).

This was all I could find.

Dear Bill,

I've sent you a private message.

However, for interested readers, David Cramond is my grandfather.  The 'illegitimate' child referred to in my first post is my mother (deceased).

Annette - your latest post appeared whilst I was drafting my PM to Bill.  Well done (again).  This is more than I've managed to find - the move to Canada (confirmed by you) - was my new 'dead end'.  Many thanks - it really is a quantum leap in terms of what I knew.

Hi to all,
I just was scanning the Angus County posts & saw Cramond

One of my cousins married a Keneth William Cramond
his father was   Sydney CRAMOND, a civil servant
Mother Mary Robertson CRAMMOND,M.S. MENMUIR

the address I have from the marriage of my cousin was
Lamley Terrace, Arbroath

is there a connection ??. Sydney is a rather unusual Scottish name.
