You're research skills are pretty damn good. Carry on; you'll get there -after all you found Hannah Maria Hankins. That was a bundle of treacle. ;)

Is there a registry for licencees for that era? That may give some good info if there  is.

I think you need to get some details from the convict records. This is late in the transportation era and records were much more informative than in early days. I think it would give at least a native place and possibly names of father and siblings. With no birth place and, it would seem, no knowledge of his mother's name, it is difficult to locate him. At this webpage, go to "sources" top right hand corner, and it has reference books that sound to have good details on the Palterston passengers.

Previously mentioned and contact was made earlier on.  It is also mentioned that the convict database has been compiled from various sources and possibly there may be no further information than is online, details of which are on the thread.

Hi Cando....
I hope you and your family had a lovely xmas, as we did...and that the weather was not too hot for you...
Re James Nelson...I have sent off to the national Archives at Kew..and waiting for a reply, but as its xmas don't expect one right away....I have given them all the details I have, so cross the fingers..
I have found James and Mary Jane Nelsons' daughters graves...
Ellen Nelson...b 17Mar.1877...died 1Nov..1931..age 54/  West Terrace Cemetry. Adelaide South Australia
Mary Jane (daughter) born 1872 . died 26oct 1966  age 94  "      "             "              "            "
Nance (Annie) West.nee Nelson..born 1879..died 8 Dec. 1996. Centennial Park..Adelaide South Australia
Emily Rose Braidwood, nee Nelson..born 1874..died 19Apr 1954...age 80.. Queensland Australia.
Flora Donovan. born 1881 ..d 4 May 1967..Adelaide.. her ashes were sent to NZ to be intered with her husband at Bromley Cemetry..Christ Church NZ

There is a James and Mary Jane Nelson also buried there at West Terrace Cemetry, but this is not confirmed as yet. if they are the parents.
I have received information of Rose Braidwood from a Robin Woods, Oklahoma.USA..who was in contact with the son of Emily Rose, he was a genealogist who was doing family history on the Braidwoods , and gave her a lot of information, but unfortunately not much on the Nelson side...She is interested in finding out more.... so will keep you up to date as I hear. :)

I cannot see if this has been covered so far - what are the names for witnesses at the 1869 marriage record - might be from bride's family.

Thank Dalek39 for the update.

Wivenhoe there are two possibilities for the arrival of Mary in WA and neither appeared to be with family.  Not mentioned on the thread however.  There are others helping Dalek39 but not on rootschat.

Cheers
Cando
