Have just received documents that tell me James Nelson..No.5835.. was officialy tried in Malta ..G & CT Ml..1859. and sent back to Portland England to wait his transportation... He was sent out to Western Australia on the ship Palmerston , arriving 1861.. His character said V.G.
On the document it states, name and age of wife or next of kin...but this has only 59 7 and underneath this 67..the rest is unreadable..so I dont know what this means.
He recieved a Ticket of leave..16 Feb 1863..and conditional pardon 7 Mar 1867.. It appears he married one week before his release, but worked outside the compound as a Harness Maker, and Saddler..
I also have his certificate of Freedom...unreadable ..Sept.1869..He was married 22 Nov.1869. to Mary Jane Donovan, Perth Congreg.Church.. They had two children in Perth, Mary Jane, born 1872..and Emily Rose..Born 1874..
They left Perth for the UK on 13 / 1 / 1875.. on the Ship Charlotte Padbury.. Did they go back to England ..or did they stop off at Adelaide..as their 3rd child was born..in Adelaide..Ellen Nelson..b.17 Mar. 1877..which leaves a three year gap from the last child...
I cant find the Charlotte Padbury, or a list of passengers, but I do have that Mary Jane Donovan came to Perth on the ship Hastings inleft England ..Apr.1869..aged 23..Thats all I have at the moment..
