I found out that James was 18 yrs at time of enlistment in 1858..so his parents would have been alive then as it states on record that next of kin are only recorded if deceased...On James and Marys marriage certificate was fathers occupation as Publican...but does not say where...possible England..as James enlisted in Kent..  Regiment stationed Canterbury & Shorncliffe,
I have found only one census for James Nelson, Publican..b 1791.. married to Elizabeth...no other family.. He's 50, she's 40..that was on 1841 census..and James was born in Ireland at that time..and the ages do not seem right....
Is there an index on Publicans around that time...I do not know where else to go..Is this the end of the line for me with James.. :-\ :)

Hi Dalek39, Have you looked at the NA at Kew for any Army records for James? If not it is definitely the place to look. I'll see if I can see anything online.

Help please...On the 1861 census...James Nelson, head..Elizabeth, wife, and Elizabeth daughter, James born around 1813...I cant quite make out what his occupation is...I am looking for James , a publican.. I found one on the 1861 C..but as James Junior was born in Shankill Belfast, 1841..joined the East Kent Regiment, Surry in 1858, age 18...I presume that they moved to England, around the Kent area, possibly after James Jnr. was born.... I tried Ireland..but so hard... ::) ;D

Hi dalek39,

Your thread has not been closed. (Although it probably is time to complete it and move on) I am unsure just what it is you now require help with and am sure the other Australian researchers feel the same way.  :-\

Perhaps you should post a simple request to the appropriate board stating clearly what it is you require help with. We do find it so much easier when the request is for a specific piece of information. You need to put the jigsaw together one piece at a time. There is no limit to the number of requests you can make on RootsChat.

You seem to now be hunting for James origin which is not in Australia. I feel the help you require is outside our scope of expertise - without specific requests for specific information you require from Australia there is really not much more we in Australia can do to help.

There is really no point asking for help with Irish records on the Australian Board. Most of us have no experience in Irish Records. aghadowey has kindly popped down here and tried to point you in the right direction.

If you require any further help with Australian Records we will of course do our best to help.

All the best in your hunt.

Cheers Kris  :)
