Has anyone heard of the surname ADSAY
« on: Tuesday 24 November 09 22:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I have been researching one of my family lines with unexpected success this week. It gave me the name of my GGG grandmother who was a MARY JANE ADSAY, daughter of ROBERT ADSAY and Mary Kidd.

I can find very few references to this name at all in Northern Ireland, and indeed the only place where i have seen it is on facebook where most with this name are from Turkey or a directory for a few Adsays living in New York.

Does anyone have any information on this family name....is it a coincidence that there is also a turkish Adsay surname or is this a sign of some middle-near eastern ancestry in my blood?

Regards

David

Are you sure that's the correct surname? it could have been mis-written or mis-transcribed in the church records. is the only place you've seen it in the church records?

That is exactly as written. The name was found on a rootsweb page relating to some baptismal and marriage records from Killead Presbyterian Church. It is spelt like this by the author in several records on that page.
I havent seen the original as i only found the webpage last night.

I've also seen the transcribed version online but am wondering if the original is actually this name or was it a different surname that the minister used this strange spelling for in his records.
Adsay doesn't come up in LDS site (under Ireland), PRONI Will Extracts, 1911 census (under Ireland), index to civil registraion (again all Ireland), Griffith's Valuation, Emerald Ancestors index, Ancestry index (under searches or family trees). All of which makes me think the name could be wrong in the church records.

I would not rule out "Adgey" and "Adjey" as possibilities

Agree with Otto. Worked with a lady years ago who was from up that direction(? Muckamore) and her name was Miss Adgey.  She was a Health Visitor.   as far as I know she lived on a farm.

Thanks for that guys. I can well believe that the letters "ge" in Adgey could be confused for "sa" when read from the original baptismal record.

I'll have a look for census type records when i get a chance.
