Benjamin Broadbent b. 1812 in Hemingfield
« on: Sunday 22 November 09 17:29 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any Hemingfield Broadbents in their family tree ? Benjamin was born in 1812 and married Elizabeth Johnson ( born Hemingfield 5th Feb 1810) on 31 Dec 1837 at St Mary's church Worsborough.

I will send off for his marriage certificate but would love to be able to find his family and so clear up a blockage quite quickly - before the certificate can be delivered.

Hi, I have just found your message while searching for my ancestors.

I have Benjamin Broadbent tagged in my file, but not been able to work out where/if he fitted in the family unit.

Your information suggests that Benjamin Broadbent m. Elizabeth Johnson b 1812 Hemingfield.

I have a Eliz. Johnson b 1810 & an Elizabeth Johnson b. 1820 both have parents Richard Johnson & Mary and baptised at Darfield.
Mother, Mary Johnson (nee Smith) was living in Hemingfield in 1841 & 1851.
Mary Ann Johnson b 1803 was a sister to Elizabeth/s born 1810/1820 m John Outram who died in 1844

I did a search for and Elizabeth b 1812 and can see one with parents James and Elizabeth - is this yours?

Anyway, one Benjamin Broadbent was involved in an attack on one John Outram (above) together with Mark Outram, and Joseph Bailey which resulted in the death of John Outram. It is a long story but they were protecting the mother, Mary Ann nee Johnson.

Now if your Elizabeth Johnson was Mary Ann Johnson's sister, then that would be how/why Benjamin Broadbent (her brother-in-law?) would have been involved in the "attack".

Is this as clear as mud?

I think I will leave it at that now, but can provide more information when you have absorbed this.
I look forward to hearing from you
Di

That's the man Di !

I went further into the story of the John Outram "murder" and a wonderful story it is.

It's quite a complicated family with a fair number of inter-relationships but I have family documents relating to several of them. Elizabeth was Mary-Ann's sister and I have the family "bible" which shows it.

I'll get back to you a bit later today- got to go now.

How exciting- we must be related.

Hello
I have recently started looking at my family tree and following this particular branch. I am a descendant of Joseph Johnson of Hemingfield - and I see that my great-great grandfather appeared at County Assizes on the 9th March 1844 it appears that he got a light sentence for manslaughter along with a few more. I would be interested to know the details of this event
I am new to this site and came across this by accident - but I think your chat is relevant and I would like to learn more. I am also curious as to which quarry Joseph Johnson owned as stated in the 1871 Census.
I also know that my grandmother Mary Elizabeth Johnson married Albert Newton (1909) and lived at Tingle Bridge, later moving to Sheffield. I am the daughter of one of their sons Cyril Newton and would like to hear from anyone researching this side. Many thanks for reading!

Hi Marcia, How exciting that this thread has been revived ! I'm away from home and all my data for a week so can' t help a great deal at the moment. I've not been doind much by way of research either for some time so it is not on the tip of my tongue. I promise I'll be in touch next week. It does sound very much as if we have common ancestors and you will be fascinated by the coroner's report and all the shenanigans surrounding the murder and trial.
Best wishes,

Grizzly.
