Back Bilberry Street, Oldham
« on: Friday 20 November 09 22:35 GMT (UK) »
Good evening,
I am looking for an address in Manchester called BACK BILBERRY STREET, in the Ecclesiastical parish of St Catherines, in the Muncipal Borough of St Michael.
I have found him living there in the 1901 census. He was listed as labourer in the Gasworks. Can anyone help with the location and if the Gasworks was near by.
Thanks

Hi

Much later than you want I know, but by 1953 (Kelly's) there was no Back Bilberry St but Bilberry St was off Dantzig St 4

Ah, it gets a mention when I go to the Dantzig St page.

Dantzig St runs from39 Withy Grove to Collyhurst Rd K 7

(K for Kersal?)

But further along the street we have this:

Charter Street Ragged School and Working girls' Home

--Ashly Lane, Irk & Gould Streets

--Parlane Street

164 Dyers Arms

Bromley, Back Bilberry & Bilberry Streets

Beesley St

--Warford St

218/220 White Hart Public House

--Dixon St

It looks as though there are quite a few addresses missing, so I wonder if they had been demolished, possibly after the blitz in WW2?

Gas works given were:

Mannchester
-

Bradford Rd10,  Collyhurst,
Drylesdon,
Partington - Irlam
Rochdale Rd - Deansgate

Salford
Regents Road 5, Trafford Park

Stretford
Longford Road

maybe the locals can sort that lot out, though of course things may have changed from when your ancestor was here.

Best wishes

Yes indeed clanseeker, Back Bilberry Street  was near  Dantzig Street which is its more modern name, it was formerly Charter Street .     Just past where Ashley Lane and Charter Street converged and became Portland Street there is Bilberry St and Back Bilberry St . They run towards the Lancs & Yorks Railway viaducts. There were gasometers on Portland St and the gasworks was just under the Viaduct bounded by Gould St and lower Tebbutt St near Rochdale Rd..Some of the houses were back to backs.  Why have you put Oldham? -It is not near Oldham Rd but is near Rochdale Rd.
Both sets of my grandparents were married in St Catherine`s church in 1883 and 1896 respectively. My mother`s father was Bandmaster at St .Catherine`s and they lived in Hancock St and Worth St. and Bronze St. These streets were very close by Bilberry St and Back Bilberry Street.
A place to pinpoint it on the map is St Michael`s Flags burial ground on Ashley Lane opposite Charter St Mission.Sadly I think The street you mention is now enclosed in a car breaker`s yard. It was the scene of a murder-- a woman`s body was found  there  few years ago.Hope this is of use to you .Viktoria.

What is the connection to Oldham please?

Nearest gas works to Danzig street/charter street would be the one up at around the new city of Manchester stadium is. One of the gasometers are still standing opposite Phillips park cemetery. Corner of Bradford road and what use to be called Hulme hall lane.

To see old photos of the gas works got to this web site and put in the search engine " Gas works "

CLICK HERE 4 THE GAS WORKS

Migky  ;)
NOTE* i just put the word gasworks in and a few gasworks i never knew about popped up. So there are a few nearer than the one i said :-[

Just like to say thanks to all who replied.
All the information is useful regardless of how small it is.

I am searching for my gr grandfather who left Ireland about 1900 and arrived in manchester to be included in the 1901 census along with his wife and three children.
I do know that his wife was back in Ireland in time for the 1911 census which she states as being a widow.

Again thanks for you assistance

I am currently updating my 1930s online map and came across Back Bilberry St.
Go to http://www.artus-familyhistory.com/source/Early%20Maps.html/Manchester%20c.1930/Main%20Map.html and click on square 2C. of the map. I have ringed off the area you need, in red.
Cheers.
