MURPHY Family, Callan, Kilkenny
« on: Friday 20 November 09 00:16 GMT (UK) »
I have found (on a website) a family grave in St. Marys Graveyard, Callan, Kilkenny which has unearthed more information for me.

It says "erected by Michael Murphy in memory of his father Edward Murphy died 1902 aged 75 years.  His mother Catherine Murphy died 1897 aged 70 years.  Also his sisters Catherine Murphy d. 19/2/1883 aged 20 years and Mary Murphy died 15/4/1922 aged 65 years".

This answers lots of questions for me as to Michael Murphy's (my ggrandfather) sisters names and a rough estimate of their birth.  I have been told that he had two brothers also called Stephen and John.

I have searched on the LDS and IFHS but am not finding a marriage certificate for Edward and Catherine Murphy nee Woods or any of the children.  If somebody could be kind enough to see can they find them for me I would be very grateful.

I think I have found Mary Murphy on the 1911 census in 53 Mill Street Callan but the age on the census says 50 but on the headstone says she was 65 when she died in 1922!!

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Registration of Catholic marriages in Ireland began 1864 (other marriages from 1845) so if Edward and Catherine were married in a Catholic church there will be no civil certificate and you'd need to search for the church record (if it exists).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi using this site which is pay per view. But can do searches of the index for free.

http://kilkenny.brsgenealogy.com/quis.php?page=0&prevStartQuery=0

I was able to find in the index a marriage of a

Catherine Woods 1852 Callan Roman Catholic Parish Kilkenny

And there is also a marriage for

Edward Murphy 1852 Callan Roman Catholic Parish Kilkenny.

So this looks most likely to be your couple's marriage. I think it costs 5 euro to view the original parish marriage record.

Also on same website if you select the Births and Callan RC parish with father name Edward Murphy.

There is a number of possible children.

I found one birth on IGI

Michael Murphy 30-MAY-1866 Parents: Edmond Murphy & Catherine Woods Callan, Kilkenny, Ireland.

From my own family research i have found Edward/Edmond/Edmund were often used by the same man.

Ger,  Thank you very much for your help and apologies for the delay in replying.  I have tried finding the children Mary and Catherine as stated on the headstone but have had no luck.  I did find a son John 7 days before the 1852 marriage!  Maybe I should be looking backwards from 1852 and not forward!!  Thank you again. I'll keep looking. Regards, Irene.

Hi everybody.  If I can ask for some help again it would be much appreciated.  I am trying to find Stephen Murphy - son of Catherine Woods and Edmund Murphy of Callan.  So far I have hit a blank - I have only been able to find one of their children and that is Michael 14 years into their marriage.  I believe he went to America and if I could find a dob for him it would simplify my search there.  Thank you all  :)

I have a Thomas Murphy born about 1795 from Callan and his wife was an Elizabeth Meehan/Mihan etc.  They emigrated to Prince Edward Island (PEI) Canada.  They are my ancestors but their parents are unknown.  One researcher posted that Thomas' parents were William Murphy and Ellen Clear.  Thomas died in Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada on Sept 2, 1898.  I share a DNA match with a Patrick Murphy from Ireland.  Patrick Murphy

3rd cousin - distant cousin?
Just wondering if anybody else may have those surnames in their Murphy family tree.  Thank you and Merry Christmas 2025.

This is an old thread from 2009, the parish registers are on online.

Callan parish register starts 1821
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0973

Look at the map and you will see Freshford is 3rd parish above Callan, so it looks like the person who has William and Ellen as parents was following a ‘hint’ which can’t be proved or relied on.

Have you got Thomas and Elizabeth’s marriage, if they married in Ireland then in was likely in Elizabeth’s parish, which may or may not be Callan.
