Burials in Oban

Thanks Garry, I have already found the burial when I visited Oban earlier this year after some excellant help from a lady in the Town Hall. I understand that there is a stillborn child in the grave and so there is only a small stone marked with the date of death of the child. It remains a mystery why there is no stone for David or Emma. I noticed when I visited Oban that some graves without headstones had small plaques naming the buried, would you know how I could go about getting a similar plaque made?

Hi Phil,

I have had some excellent help from Gerry and it occurred to me during the correspondence with him that the reason for there not being a headstone at the grave of my great-grandmother's eldest brother (a very prominent Oban businessman & chairman of the parish council) was that his religion may have frowned upon the custom. He was a staunch Wee Free and from what I can gather that particular branch of Presbyterianism is very strict about anything like that. Someone else may know for sure.
It was said that he was a founder-member of Oban co-op (Share number 1) but when they decided to apply for a licence to sell alcohol he withdrew his money from it. Don't know just how true that is but there must be a grain of truth in it.

Thank you Monica and thank you Garry, I don't think the person I am seeking is in Pennyfuir but his son thinks he is so I am trying to rule it out. His name is James Hannah, born c1882, died aged 60 at Dalintart Hospital Oban on 26th March 1944. Oban TEC Services only hold records from 1945 onwards, so he could be buried anywhere in Oban or even Strontian or Ardgour perhaps even sent home to his birthplace of Wigtownshire. Any help would be appreciated, I've been searching online burial records for over three months now. Kind Regards, Sheena.

   hi Sheena our records show a James Hannah age 60, died 30th March 1944, buried in pennyfuir cemetery section D lair 278, the grave is unmarked as he is buried in the "poors" ground, this is an area of the cemetery where graves were not purchased. Garry.

Thank you very much Garry, Oban TEC show no records of a James Hannah being buried inPennyfuir in 1944 and neither do the online records for Pennyfuir.

It's entirely possible that this is the James Hannah that I am looking for as his official records show he died in the hospital on the 26th of March and the death registered on the 27th of March, as it was a poor burial it may well be that it was recorded on the day of burial itself.

To let you know how helpful this has been to me it's because when James Hannah died he left three young children orphaned as his wife died in 1941. That's why it would have been a "Poor's" grave. Of the three children only one still survives and he has never know where his mother or father were laid to rest, I have already found his mother but this information will complete a family chapter and enable his details to be added to his family tree.
