uniform & badge identification please.
« on: Thursday 19 November 09 16:10 GMT (UK) »
Found this photo I think it is my Granddad (William Mitchell) when he went off to Australia around 1900, he then went to South Africa & back to Cornwall in 1910. Does anyone know what the uniform & badge are?

Looks like standard issue Australian army uniform and rising sun badge.  I'll move this thread to the Armed Forces board where the experts live  :)

One more charge and then be dumb,

May the victors when they come

Cheers everyone, I googled "rising sun badges" and there it was, great stuff. It is a pity I cannot make out the writing on the badge but just to know it was an Australian Commonwealth Military badge fits in well with the fact he went to Australia when he first left Cornwall. Thank you all again  :) regards sheila

If he was back in Cornwall in 1910, he wouldn't have been in the AIF during WW1 (unless he went back to Aus in the meantime)...

However, the NAA does have service records for other periods as well:
