Donbar/Dunbar
« on: Wednesday 18 November 09 18:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I think I need to prefix this message by admitting its a longshot and any info would probably be useful. Anyway basically I have ancestors in Madeley, Shrops who carry the name Donbar/Dunbar. The earliest date I have is Andrew Donbar 4/1/1764 who may have had a father named Welldone [sic]. Since it is a Scottish surname and I can find no other family lines in England I wondered if anyone knows of Dunbars who moved to England in the 18th c or could advise which Scottish counties might be worth investigating further.   Many Thanks.  TL

Hi totally leics,
I had a quick gander on the IGI www.familysearch.org
And this is what I found.

Andrew Donbar
christened 04/01/1764
Madely,Shrops.
father
Welldone Donbar
mother
Isabelle.

I also found a sibling.
Eliz. Dunbar
Christened  14/12/1764.
madeley.
father
Welldon Donbar
mother
Bell.

Looking for a marriage for Welldon I could only find:
Weldon Dunbar
married to Sarah Tolbott
24/03/1777.
(Pos his second wife),
a child called Mary born 11/06/1777.
Christened 12/10/1777 Birmingham
To the above.
If this is your man then you could try and look for a death of Isabelle between
1764 and 1777.
kind regards,Billy.

There may (or may not?) be some connection to the family of Duncan Dunbar II, who was a shipping magnate during the 19th C.  His father, Duncan Dunbar I, was born somewhere in Scotland, ... but his mother, Phoebe Bailey, was born in Lymington, Hampshire, and DDII and his siblings seem to have been born around Shoreditch or Limehouse.  I have a family connection with the Dunbars; my 3xgt grandfather's first wife was DDII's sister Justina.

If you google "Duncan Dunbar" (in inverted commas), there's a fair bit of info for the finding.

 :)
I live in Sydney, Australia, and I'm researching: Powell, Tatham, Dunbar, Dixon, Mackwood, Kinnear, Mitchell, Morgan, Delves, & Anderson
