Bowers. Eccles. Lancs
« on: Wednesday 18 November 09 15:52 GMT (UK) »
Joseph Bowers born 1844? Eccles Lancashire
Married Elizabeth Dilworth 1867
Died 1925

Any information on Josephs birth or parents would be appreciated, I seem to have hit a brick wall.

I am new to genealogy so any pointers  may put me on the right path

Thanks

Hi,

Welcome to Rootschat  :).

I would start by suggesting that you obtain a copy of the marriage certificate.   I have just had a look on the FreeBMD - www.freebmd.org.uk - and this seems to be the reference for the marriage.  Certificates can be ordered from www.gro.gov.uk and they cost £7.00 each.

Mar 1867
Stoke-on-Trent 6b 295
Joseph Bowers
Elizabeth Dilworth

Catherine Doohan
Michael Hopkins

The certificate will give you the name of both Joseph's and Elizabeth's fathers.

I can only see one birth in Lancashire for that date and it is in Chorlton not Eccles  ??? (not that far away from each other though).

Mar 1844
Joseph Hiram Bowers
Chorlton 20 244

The birth certificate will give you the names of both his parents and also the maiden name of his mother.

Have you searched for them on any of the census' yet? If you have post what you have and hopefully Rootschat can fill in the gaps.

Hi and welcome to rootschat ;D

As Luzzu says, the marriage cert will be a good way to start off and be sure you are on the right track. As well as giving you the father's names it will give you their occupations.

Hi Luzzu and charlotteCH

Thanks to you both for your prompt replies and advice.

The marriage cert seems to be the way to go.
