BOGEND, ISLANDMAGEE - COMPLETED THANKY YOU
« on: Tuesday 17 November 09 17:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello from Canada,

Can anyone tell me where Bogend, Islandmagee is/was?

According to Islandmagee birth extracts of 1888 the residence of my great-grandfather Alexander McCalmont at the birth of his son Alexander was Bogend yet all documents indicate Ballymoney, Islandmagee as the family residence.

Is Bogend perhaps the name of the McCalmont home in the townland of Ballymoney, parish of Islandmagee?

Thank you for your continued great assistance.

Roger

Here's a reference to it which might help: "Mr. Wm. McMurtry, Methodist Church Cottage, Bogend, Islandmagee, Co. Antrim"

Hi Roger

I live in Islandmagee, Bogend is an area within an old townland, roughly its where the Gobbins Road and Middle Road meet near the Methodist Church.

I found this reference in the book 'History of Islandmagee' by Dixon Donaldson.

The Great War - in Memory........

M'Calmont, Alexander. Age 31. N.C.O., 18th Batt. Canadians.  Died in hospital at Boulogne, from wounds received in action, 11th June, 1918.  Son of Alexander M'Calmont, Portmuck, and the late Eliza Jane M'Calmont (Colville); husband of Rose M'Calmont (nee M'Mnus) of Thamesville, Ontario, Canada.

Roger,
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission site (google cwgc) lists what appears to be the same man but gives his age as 27 and his rank as Private! The certificate shows a photograph of the "small" graveyard.

Thank you all.

So Bogend is an area probably not more than a hundred acres at most within Ballymoney townland that was home to a few families.

If the area was only large enough to support a few farming families Carolann has likely given me my gggrandmother's name & at least 7 more lines of family to research.

The CWGC listing of Alexander McCalmont is my grandfather.

Hi Roger

Glad I could help, I am visiting one of the old graveyards in the next few days, will see if I can find anything more for you.

I realised I had a spelling error on the memorial....it should read....Rose M'Calmont (nee M'Manus)

Kind Regards

Meryderry,

Thanks for the info.

The Colville/Thompson & McCalmont/Colville marriages are the right ones. I'm trying to figure out the Campbell name on the marriage too. I think the registrar made a mistake (I hope).

The McCalmont/Stewart marriage may be a relative but no proof yet but it's not my direct John as he would have been born about 1854.

Take care & good hunting in your research.
