shipping HK to Sydney September 1939 - Completed
« on: Tuesday 17 November 09 08:03 GMT (UK) »
Is there a list of ships that arrived in Sydney in September October 1939. I'm looking for the names of any that embarked in Hong Kong and disembarked Sydney. Specifically looking at the Chinese refugees that were bound for Auckland a few days/weeks after.

Hi there,

Have you tried the following online site for newspapers in that period...  The Canberra Times has been digitised and there's over 700 responses to my keyword search "shipping" of that paper from mid 1939 to Dec 1939...

Cheers,

Thanks, I had a look last night - Great site, but nothing found so far. I know in the NZ Papers Past the papers used to have the names of the boats coming into port, and sometimes the passengers coming in or departing.

Hi there,

That Aussie site is regularly updated, and they are anticipating that the Sydney paper (Sydney Morning Herald) will be all there (umm up to 1954  ;D) within weeks.... seems to me they are up to about 1870 with that particular paper, and adding a decade each week...

Cheers,  I hope the papers will eventually have the info you are seeking...

The Archives sent it to me. I managed to get the names of the people I was looking for. They were the Ngs, arriving from HK to Sydney. It had a list of the passengers destined for Auckland and another list destined for Wellington.

Have now received the shipping list for the Taiping that arrived in Sydney - 23 September 1939. The people I was looking for were on their way to NZ. The shipping list shows passengers going on to Auckland and Wellington, and 1 to Fiji. It also has the names of people who wer Australia bound.
