Totley, Derbyshire - Baptism Records
« on: Monday 16 November 09 22:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi!

I'm trying to find the parents of Harriet Baxby b. abt 1816 in, according to the censuses, Totley, Derbyshire. She married Alfred Crookes on 12 Aug 1833 in Bakewell Parish Church, and was said to be "Harriet Baxby of Carver". I believe Dore and Totley were both in the district of Dronfield at that time, but unfortunately I don't know which church she would have been christened or baptised in.

If it's possible to trace the baptism without knowing the church, can anyone help with a look-up at Derbyshire Records Office? I now live in Dorset and rarely get the chance to visit Derbyshire.

If more information is needed, please let me know.

Thanks!

Mal

If as suggested she was "from/born" Calver she could have been baptised at Baslow just down the road

Yes, I suppose it's possible Harriet was baptised in Baslow, or even Bakewell, since she was married there. Three censuses say she was born in Totley, one says Dore and another Sheffield. Her husband Alfred Crookes was born in Dore according to the censuses, but his mother came from Froggatt, she didn't marry his father John Goddard, and he was christened in Stoney Middleton. He and Harriet lived in Sheffield from the 1841 census onwards.

I'm trying to complete 7 generations on both sides of the family and need Harriet's parents to do this.  Any help would be appreciated.  :)

Regards,
Mal

Having re read your original post it appears Harriet was "of Calver" so she probably was bapt somewhere else, have you looked on www.genuki.org.uk that might tell you which church is nearest to Totley/Dore

Thanks to all who have replied so far. The information on Dore and Totley is very helpful. It will give me a starting point in my search for Harriet's baptism. Every little helps, as they say!

Thanks again!
