Needle in a haystack?
« on: Sunday 15 November 09 10:57 GMT (UK) »
Am I looking for a needle in a haystack?  Or can sombody recognise this man?

I have been trying to find an ancestor of my husbands for a while with the surname Lewis.  I've been looking at the earlier census and unless there were some porkies told at the marriage I can't seem to find it.

On her marriage certificate in 1871 Ann Lewis gave her age as 18 years so possible birth date of 1853.  She gives her fathers name as Thomas Lewis deceased Baker Journeyman.  On later census with her husband, her age is about same, just one year diferent.

Thanks

Hi Timetraveller

Can you give a bit more detail please?

Where is this family in 1881 onwards?  Where does Ann say she's born?  Who are the witnesses to the marriage and where does it take place?  Was it before the 1871 census?  Any family living with them after the marriage?

Do you have any other threads about this family?

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Marriage date was 11 November 1871, witnesses to the marriage were I believe the grooms parents William and Eliza Maisey.  Her address on marriage certificate is Cheltenham.

In the 1881 census the corner is off the page where Ann gives her birthplace, all I can see is Gloucester.  In 1891/1901 censuses she says her birthplace is Cheltenham same as her husband.  There are no other people living with them other than their children.

What are you saying, Chas?

You have us all puzzled - have you edited out a mis-calculation?

Gloucestershire Family History Society has transcribed Cheltenham Registration District births 1837-1960 from the actual registers held by the Registrar.  For a small fee they will search the index.  If Ann's birth is found, her father's name (if given) and mother's maiden name will be noted, plus the year and Registrar's reference to order the certificate.

Well I've had my reply which said basically what I knew already that nothing had changed.  If you order a certificate and some info doesn't match then they will not send out a certificate.  But I told them that they were one of the offices that had sent me a certificate for something else and the info I gave didn't match.  Suprise suprise I received no answer.

So I guess this will have to remain my needle in a haystack as I cannot find any info that will lead me in the right direction.

Thanks for all your replies.
