Where to post?

Hi i've just joined today and I'm getting alittle lost... are lookup requests allowed? if so where can it be posted? sorry if i've missed the instructions somewhere...i've been searching to many records today and am almosy cross eyed ;)

Look up requests are allowed (with the exception of the 1911 census and when people who may well be still living are concerned).

Welcome to Rootschat.  You will get loads of help and will soon find your way around.

If you have a query relating to a specific geographical area, I would go to the board for that area and then you can either post on the general board or on the lookup requests board.  There also boards for different occupations and special interests.

If it is more general, then the beginners or the common room board is a good place to start.

If you make a post and the mods think you will get a better response on another board, they will move it for you.

If you click on "help" at the top of the board, there are some tips on there.  Take time to have a look around and don't worry about asking for help, we were all new once and everyone is really friendly.

The earliest useful census is 1841 but this still has limitations - it rounds down adult ages to the nearest 5 years, only states whether born in that county or not and does not give relationships to others in the household.  After that they are every 10 years as I am sure you know.

Civil records started 1st July 1837 but parish records can go back a further 300 years if you are lucky - most tend to only reach about 1650.  So asking about any of these could get you an answer.
