BROOMHOUSE
« on: Saturday 14 November 09 18:11 GMT (UK) »
I raised this query once before, but I am still at odds over exactly where BROOMHOUSE is located.  Census entries indicate "Broomhouse, Lanarkshire", however, google searches show "Broomhouse in West Edinburgh", as well as "Broomhouse near Glasgow" and finally "Broomhouse in Midlothian".......  Is there more than one Broomhouse in Scotland?  Or - are all these places in Lanarkshire?

My apologies for my ignorance regarding Scotland's geography but hope someone will take pity on me to explain the differences, if any.

Thanks very much for any and all suggestions.

The Edinburgh and Midlothian ones are not in Lanarkshire. The only Broomhouse I know of in this county is the one between Uddingston and Carmyle.

Have a look at this link.

The only Broomhouse I know is in Edinburgh.  I wouldn't say it was "rough", but its favourite son, Graham Souness was regarded as "a bit soft".

I just did a quick search  for 'Broomhouse Lanarkshire' and this reference came up from a posting on a different board last year

" It is approximately 7 miles east of Glasgow Cross, east of Parkhead &
Tollcross. I believe that it was on the extension of the Tollcross Road, but
maybe on the extension of London Road.
These two roads run roughly parallel with each other.
My memory of it c1942 is that it consisted of an old block of brownstone
apartments on the south side of the road. "

No idea how accurate that is, but it sounds from that that it did exist as a place but no longer does, or possibly is just the name of a local area?    Interestingly 2 businesses come up using the Broomhouse name, and they are both in Baillieston Road, Uddingston, so perhaps it was just a local area?

My thanks to Lodger, Hibee, Maggie & Cammie for your very helpful info.  My problem has been that I'm searching for the birth of a Jeanie SMITH who was born, according to the Ellis Island Emigration papers, in "Broomhouse, Scotland".  When I attempt a search on ScotlandsPeople, I am unsure of which District/City/County I should be looking at.  As you can imagine there are far too many SMITHs to just take a guess.  I was hoping to be able to scroll down the District column in order to make a more informed guess.  Do I choose Midlothian, Glasgow, Lanark, or ????????

Oh well, my problem, not yours, and I thank you again for your efforts on my behalf.  Much appreciated.

If the census entries say Broomhouse, Lanarkshire then it will be the small village/hamlet just south of Baillieston on the outskirts of Uddingston.

Daldowie crematorium is classed as being in Broomhouse

What year was Jeanie born?

Sancti:

Jeanie was born between 1885-1886:-

Marriage record indicates 1885 (20 years old in 1905)
Ellis Island Emigration indicates - 1885 (23 years in 1908)
1891 Census - 1886 (5 years old)
1901 Census - 1886 (15 years old)

Jeanie travelled to the USA with her son in 1908 to meet up with her husband who was living/working in Pennyslvania, and she and her husband probably both died soon after, leaving their son (my father) an orphan - this according to family rumour.  No further substantiated particulars can be found after Jeanie's arrival in 1908.

I appreciate your interest - thank you.

Do you have the marriage record?

When and where did she marry?
