Help Please with missing people on censuses.
« on: Saturday 14 November 09 12:48 GMT (UK) »
Please could anyone help or give me any more tips for searching?
Think I have finally found my ancestors on 1881 census living 13 Coronation Sq Chorlton on Medlock St Clements Longsight.
Elizabeth Leech Widow 40 Embroiderer
George Leech 17 Labourer
William 11
Charles 5
This is the exact area where George the son married in 1884.
I can't find any members of the family on 1871 census. Elizabeth & George would definately be on it but maybe not William & definately not Charles. If I could find them on 1871 census & Elizabeth was married to Thomas then I definately have the correct family.
Thanks Sue

Hi,

I got Georges Fathers name from his marriage certificates. First one in 1884 to Mary Burns, but it doesn't state that his Father is deceased but no trace of Thomas on any census's, it states he was a joiner. His second marriage in 1923 to Henrietta Charlotte Knight, states his Father was a labourer deceased. On all census's for George from 1881 he says he was born Manchester Lancs & is a labourer.
The problem I have is that I don't have enough info to get Georges birth certificate. Looks as if he was born George Henry LEECH but by 1911 it is changed to LEACH. There are so many George Leech & Leach born between 1864 & 1867 in the Manchester area that I need more info on him as I'm not 100% certain that his Mother was Elizabeth. I need to find him on 1871 census. His age differs slighltly on all census's & on his burial. On censuses he is down as just George but on both his marriages & on his daughters marriage he is definately down as George Henry.

Regards Sue

Hi Sossle

I found a George Henry in 1871 aged 5, his mother is Adelaide and a widow
so I looked back to 1861 and found her married to a Thomas.
Thomas was a machine Glazer in 1861 and they lived in 79 Kenworthy St
Dukinfield, Manchester. (1871 says kenworthy st is Stalybridge)

In 1871 Adelaide is a cotton reeler. There are 3 girls also named Mary, Emily
and Eliza(beth) Ann (8,5 and 5m in 1861).
I use the g...ogist and find it hard to give the page numbers etc I'm afraid but I think this could
be your man. Perhaps the girls name's sound familiar ?

Hi,

Thank you for the info. I already have Adelaide in a few censuses & I thought at first this was George & his Mother but I think the George is George Harry not Henry & she seemed to marry very quickly looking at when Thomas Leech seemed to die. I still have it as an option though. The 1881 census with Elizabeth seemed to fit in because of the area that they lived.
