Burial in Edinburgh, 1840's
« on: Friday 13 November 09 08:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to find the death certificate or grave of a relative in Edinburgh.
Based on his will and testament I know he died in Edinburgh in September 1845, and he was living at Frederick Street at the time.
Scotland's people doesn't list the death, and I am not sure how to go about finding the grave.
Is the city council search room going to help? Or is it possible to know where he would likely be buried based on the date and his address? I am able to have a walk around and look myself, if there aren't too many possibilities!

Thanks!

Hi

Details of some of the resources available in Edinburgh are here:

If you post the name and any details you have someone might be able to do a lookup if they have one of the books of MI transcriptions.

The closest burial ground to Frederick Street would be St Cuthbert's at the West End of Princess St.

Thanks for the reply Kirsty.

The name is Alex(ander) Galloway.
Spouse was Agnes Galloway nee Hill (married in Edinburgh 1798).

I have on the 1841 census that he was born in Edinburgh, but don't have a birth record to confirm. His birth would have been around 1770/1 from what I have found.

I have seen the marriage entry from 3rd January 1798, Agnes's father was from Lasswade.

There are a number of children born to Alexander Galloway and Agnes Hill in Angus 1799-1810 which would fit with that marriage.

I found a census record in Edinburgh, North Fredrick St. in 1841. Is this the one you refer to?
The sons Alexander and John in the census would seem to be a little younger (even allowing for the rounding down to the nearest 5 years that occurred with the 1841 census).
It may be they just were not particularly accurate about their ages, or maybe the first Alexander died and a younger brother given the same name.

Are you positive this is the correct family you have found in the census? Do you have any idea which religious denomination they were as that might have had some bearing on where he would have been buried.

Hi,
Yes, Agnes was the daughter of James Hill, paper maker, of Polton Mill in Lasswade.

Alexander and Agnes are both recorded as living in High Street Parish at the time of their marriage.

Their first 2 children were then born in Alyth, Perthshire, and then the family moved North to Arbroath, Angus where the rest of their children were born.

I have also seen that there is some uncertainty in the son Alexander's age, but I am quite sure this is the correct census record as all the data ties in with Alexander's (senior) will and testament. There seems also to have only been one Galloway who was noted as a tailor in Edinburgh at that time.

In terms of religion I am not sure, but as I haven't seen anything to suggest they were catholic, then protestant is my best guess.

I had just seen old posts on other boards with the same information on them. :)

I think you must be correct about the census.  All I can suggest is that you work your way through the local burial grounds and hope that being a tailor in Frederick street means there was enough money for a headstone!

You could try posting a lookup request in case some rootschatters have the MI inscription books, otherwise I think you might have to head to George IV Bridge and the Edinburgh Rooms.
