thomas amott birth ref and 1841/51/61 census
« on: Thursday 12 November 09 20:04 GMT (UK) »
i cannot find a birth registration for Thomas Amott born Radcliffe :Lancs or Ratcliffe 1844-1849 father Frank (Francis?) Amott. I use Ancestry and have tried FreeBMD to no avail.  CAn anyone find him for me?  Or give me any more ideas to try to track him down?  In censuses from 1871 he appears under a variety of names from Amot to Amoth to Arnott!

I take it you either have him on a census or a marriage cert.

When & where was the marriage, what occupations were given, what names witnessed.
Whom was he with on census, what was the location and the references?

Is this the chap in a previous request of yours?
well I just got hold of a copy of Herbert's birth cert and it shows a Thomas Amot named as dad.  well done JoRose!

Herbert b 1872 Barnsley.

Hello,

Lancashire OPC has this marriage -  :-\

25 Aug 1845 St John the Evangelist, Farnworth with Kearsley
Frances Armat - Full age Weaver Widower of Halshaw Moor- Father:  Thomas Armat, Farmer
Harriet Ratcliffe -Full age Widow of Halshaw Moor - Father: Thomas Holt, Weaver
Witnesses:  Joseph Hawley and  Martha Hawley

I can't find any of them in the 1841 census  ???

Lancashire BMD has the couple as Francis Amat and Hannah Ratcliffe

yes herbert is thomas' son...he was born before thomas married his mother jane atkinson hence he often referred to as herbert atkinson ...

am not sure about the Armat/Amat references...will have a scout through the census to see if can track them in the location the marriage is set at....is very bizarre...

details from thomas' marriage cert
Thomas Amott bachelor married jane atkinson widow both resided at  Worsborough he was a clerk.  His dad Frank Amott a bricklayer.  hers william carr a shoemaker.  witnesses names very hard to read looks like thomas taylor and henry alllerton> marriage took place on 22 mar 1874.

first found in 1871 census as Thomas Amott (Arnott according to ancestry transcript) in worsborough.  got him in all censuses since.  it is therefore from 1861 backwards that I need to find  him...and his birth details so can order certificate...

Well I searched for ages last night and that's all I could find  ??? Does he maintain Ratcliffe/Radcliffe as his place of birth - I noticed that it looked like Lincolnshire in 1861 but Lancashire otherwise. That's why the Farnworth one seemed the best bet so far- without any others at the moment  ;)

I did notice similar names in Derbyshire too but again - it was that Lancashire birthplace which was at odds.

I thought it looked like Linerliveshire in 1871 (Linlithgowshire)? (any scottish connection to the surname)?
