Is there anyone else looking at Nisbets in the Coldingham area in the early 1800's? I've got as far back as my ggggg grandfather's (John Nisbet) marriage to Helen (Ellen) Aitchison in 1818 in Coldingham parish. I'm planning on visiting the record office in a few weeks to investigate further.
Nisbet - Berwickshire, Haddingtonshire, Midlothian, Linlithgowshire, Stirlingshire
Borthwick, Aitchison, Denholm, Jamieson
Smith - Stirlingshire, Linlithgowshire, County Down

Hi Snimmo243
I don't have very much just bits and bobs like Helen father was called George, names of farm/locations, etc. the rest of the stuff is maybe's
I will have another look at my notes and see if I can put something together.
Being from the farming community and Record dates can cause problems because of the hirings and incomplete registers, etc.
I have one advantage I live in the Scottish Borders

Hi Snimmo243
I had another look at my records and on ScotlandsPeople and found out that Helen Aitchison died 19 Oct 1861 at Ayton, Berwickshire and her parents were George Aitchison and Alison Alexander.
Re John Nisbet I have a hunch about his parents but will have to check he died before 1851 (because Helen was a widow in Berwickshire in 1851) - I found the family in the Oldhamstocks, East Lothian (it a small villiage just next to Cockburnspath, Berwickshire (its in Berwickshire nowadays since the slight redrawing of the regions) in the 1841 census.

Possibly could be cousins
Nisbet & Aitchison very common surname in Berwickshire Coldingham area
Re: John Nisbet if the standard rule on naming apply the parents could be James & Margaret as his first son John Duncan Nisbet looks like he was named after a prominent family friend or local man

Just wondering if you know why Peter Nisbet, Alison & James' younger brother emigrated west under a bit of a cloud - the mums cousins mentioned it a few years ago, but didn't seem to know the reason, just that he had to quickly.

I haven't picked up a Peter Nisbet in that generation but I'm planning a visit to Scotlands people in a few weeks and will look into it further, I've found a few deaths in the Berwick area around the same period but cannot confirm 100% they are from my tree
