possible illigitimate search

Is it possible to find details of a friend’s father born illegitimately London in 1906? My friend would love to see her father’s birth certificate – both her parents are now deceased.  She knows the address where her grandmother was working as a housekeeper when she became pregnant and I know that she went on to settle down with another man after her illegitimate child was born and although she had a daughter with this man and my friends father bore his name she thinks they never married.   I have found her grandmother on 1901 census but that is all and I was hoping someone could give me some idea how to continue the search.

If his name is known, then you can search on FreeBMD in all four quarters of 1906, and (assuming he's not a John Smith !) you ought to be able to locate him.   Once you have the ref number, you can apply for a birth certificate ...

Thank you very much for helping me – I believe I have found him but will check the ‘middle’ name with my friend.  It would seem that he was given his mother’s surname on his birth record even though he knew of his father and that family acknowledged him and offered support when asked.  He always used the ‘inherited’ name of his ‘step-father’ however which was the surname my friend grew up with.  Thank you again for your help   :)
