Hi,

Could be William James Phillipson, born on 17/10/1898 - death registered in North Tyneside in July 1987.

Reference Vol 2 page 1013.

Hi janeann

If you first get your grandfather's marriage certificate from the reference Stan gave, you will find out a bit more about him, his age, address & occupation, and his father's name and occupation.

The man mentioned by Kenny was born in the Newcastle area and died there, so that may not be him.  His birth registration reference is
Dec 1898  Newcastle T    10b   89     PHILLIPSON  William James

but if your grandfather lived in Sunderland it doesn't mean he was born there, if you find his father's name we can then find him in the census and find his birthplace from that.

In the free 1911 census index there is a William Phillipson b.1896 living in Hartlepool with parents John Joseph and Mary Ellen, you would need to buy credits to see the full details

In 1901 the family is living in Sunny Brow, near Auckland, Durham
RG13 Piece 4650 Folio 92 Page 1

PHILLIPSON
John J    head mar 31    Cokeyard Filler    Grahamsley Durham
Mary E   wife   mar 29                            Sacriston Durham
Margaret A   dau    10                              Crook Durham
Francis        son      7                                 Sunnybrow  Durham
William           "       5                                     "
David    brother  15 Brick Works Labourer  Crook Durham

This is the likely birth registration for this William:
Jun 1896   Auckland    10a   200   Phillipson    William   (Auckland registration district covers Sunny Brow)

The marriage cert would tell you if this is your family

i am sorry i dont think i worded my post very well, i do know who my grandfather was and i do have his marriage certificate (well a copy anyway) and i know where he was born and his family, what i am looking for is where and when he died,
he left my grandmother before she died and my mother and uncle never heard from him again and never spoke about him.
i once heard a story that he was blind when he left, but on his marriage certificate his occupation was a car driver, could he have gone blind after they got married.
all these questions i have no answers for and no one to ask, thats why i thought if i knew where he died and when i could start working my way back in his life.
thanks janeann

Hi Janeann  :)

It was just that you said in your first post
my grandfather was william phillipson born in 1896, he married agnes wright in 1930 - 1931 and they lived in sunderland.  that is all i know about him

Was the family I found in 1901 the right one?  I wanted to make sure he was the William born in Sunny Brow 1896 and not the William James Kenny found born in 1898 Newcastle - it all helps to pinpoint his death, which I realise is mainly what you are looking for.  Was his forename just William, no middle name?

To find if he remarried after 1947, you need to do a search of the GRO marriages from that date onwards, and the same for the death.  If you find a death for a man with the right birth year, as with the Blackpool one, you would then have to check with the local registrar or the GRO to see if there is any information on the death certificate to show you've got the right one, but that could be difficult, as there's not always much information given on those.

Did the family have any idea what area he may have moved to?

Kind regards
Barbara

Yes, before you could do that you would need to find his second marriage, (if there was one) and then look for births after that date with the right mother's maiden name.

You did say the only one you could find was in Blackpool, did you look through the whole of the GRO deaths index quarter by quarter from 1947 onwards?

You never know, hopefully someone reading this thread may recognise the name and get in touch.

Kind regards
Barbara
