In the 1881 census they were in Forres Seafield (Grieve's House)
Occupation Farm Grieve.
John's death in 1931 was registered by his son David French.
Their children I have discovered are
William
Mary Ann
Alexander
Simon
George
Isabella
Rachel
David.
Simon,George,Isabella and David are buried with their parents.
Rachel on the other stone is buried with her husband Alexander French (the exact same name as her brother).
It is William,Mary Ann and Alexander I am having trouble with.
Hope this helps.

Alexander gave up farming and became a police officer in the south west of Scotland. The Rachel on the other stone is Alexander's wife, he is buried in the south. I knew David but can't help with the others.

The mention of the Forres War Memorial made me think to look for Frenches in my copy of the Morayshire Roll of Honour. There are eight of them:-

1.  Edward James Son of Arthur French & Isabella Rhind Edwards or Fraser
2.  Grigor Galletly son of Alexander & Mary Ann French.
3. James son of John French & Helen Whyte
4. John son of  Arthur & Isabella (as above )
5. John Scott son of Alexander & Mary Ann (as above)
6. Joseph son of William & Elizabeth French
7. Simon Anton son of John French & Rachael Williamson Or French
8. William Alexander son of Alexander & Mary Ann (as above)

Any of these of any interest I can give you more details

Regards,
Jen

The  RoH is not on the internet, I have the copy that my Grandfather used when he was on the committee for the WW1 war memorial for New Elgin. There is a copy at the Heritage Centre in Elgin.
By the way many moons ago when I was little my aunt & uncle lived at Easter Greens and I used to stay there for the school holidays.

Jen
