MArmaduke Nelson of Beverley
« on: Monday 09 November 09 19:27 GMT (UK) »
I'm still trying to find the baptism of Marmaduke Nelson who was a Mayor of Beverley, and was buried in St Mary Beverley in 1714. From his MI he was born c1648. In his will he mentions a brother called Steven.
I have found the YAS transcript for Beverley St Mary and he wasn't baptised there.
Does anyone know of a transcript for St John (the Minster) in Beverley, and/or is anyone able to check the baptisms for St John?
many thanks
Bob Barber

Thanks to all who've replied to this post. It's almosat exactly 2 years since I placed it.
I never have found Marmaduke’s baptism, but I do now know his birth date. He has a memorial in St Mary’s Beverley (see attached) which gives his dates, and the names of his children. Either the baptism records from 1648 were poor/lost (it was the Civil War period), or I’m looking in the wrong place.
I know quite a lot about the Nelson family of Beverley. I’m descended (in a rather tortuous way) from Marmaduke’s son Charles. His son Christopher was a bit of a black sheep I think. Christopher married into the Bygott family of Barton-on-Humber (Susanna Bygott). Their daughter Kitty married a John Peel, and then through several more generations to me. The genealogy is pretty solid, at least to my satisfaction.
I think Marmaduke’s father was a William, but since I don’t have the baptism I can’t be sure. There are records of the leases of 2 cottages and a stables next to St Mary’s churchyard in Beverley passing from a William to this Marmaduke, then to Marmaduke’s son William. So it’s very likely the first William was Marmaduke’s father.

Do you know the book by Thomas Tombleson  Fragments relating to Barton on Humber (1906)? There are several pages on the Nelson family, and other prominent local families.

Hi

I also have found the marriage of Marmaduke to Elizabeth in 1657.
At St Peters Church, in Leeds.
There is also a Steven Nelson with 6 children  I could find also
christened at St Peters Church, so it looks like this could be your
family.
Steven had, Elizabeth 1690, Mary born 1698, Nathaniel born 1691
Absolon born 1693, Esther born 1696 and Solomon born 1701
They could have been a religious family with those Bible names.
I only managed to find 2 children of Marmaduke.
Hannah Nelson born 27th June 1658 and christened 4th July 1658
at St Peters
Jacob born 28th October 1671 christened 5th November 1671.
It would not be far for Marmaduke to travel to Beverley from Leeds.
In thoses days you moved for better money, job and circumstances.
Its not unusual for birth dates to be wrong in those days.  Not many people could read or write and you had to take notice of your parents or else.

regards
Sandymc
p.s. I did all of this before I saw your latest post.  Are you saying that Marmaduke didnt come from Leeds????

pps. If you now know his birth date could you share it with us

My apologies for the short reply in my last posting. I was cut off in full flow when about to attach an image of Marmaduke Nelson’s MI. It was probably too large (? limit of 500kB for attachments). The text of the MI is as follows (the East Yorkshire FHS has transcribed all the MIs for St Mary Beverley):

Here lieth the Body of Marmaduke
Nelson of Beverley Gen who was
Born ye 17 of September 1648
And died the 12 of April 1714
He had by Elizabeth his Wife
Daughter of William Long of Barto[n]
Esq these Children Willm Marmad[uke]
John Christopher Helen Charle
And Robert of Whom John Died
Infant: The rest surviving Him
Also the Body of Mrs ANN NELSON who de
parted this Life the 15th Day of May in the
Year of our Lord 1780 in the 60th Year
of her Age

   So lots of useful genealogy.
Thanks to all who have responded to this line of enquiry.
Treetotal’s link was to a lease which mentions the ANN NELSON in Marmaduke Nelson’s MI and another Marmaduke Nelson (who was the grandson of the first Marmaduke, and sister of Ann). Also some Graburns, who intermarried with the Nelsons.
DORAN 54 & Sandymc’s Leeds connections are interesting which I will follow up, although all the indications are that Marmaduke’s father (?William) was in Beverley from at least 1650. There was a William with 3 baptisms at St Mary Beverley:
Mary 26 June 1650; Ellin 25 August 1652 & Martha 15 October 1654 (bur 18 August 1656) who could be the father of Marmaduke (b 17 September 1648). A Marmaduke Nelson (maltster) was mayor of Beverley in 1666 &1682 and appears in the Hearth Tax returns for Beverley in 1672. Mrs Ellen Nelson wf of Mr Wm Nelson was buried 26 February 1688/9 at St Mary. Plus the leases I mentioned in my previous posting. Lots of circumstantial evidence, but no marriage or burial of William or baptism of Marmaduke.
Looking again at William’s will (written 1711) he refers to “my Brother Stephens” (not Stephen), which probably means a brother-in-law, but I can’t place him.
Finally, a request for local knowledge. The baptism of Mary (1650) was to Willam Nelson of Pighill. The Hearth Tax for William was for Norwood, Hengate and Walkergate Ward. Are these places in/near St Mary’s parish?
