Burtons of chester
« on: Monday 09 November 09 12:29 GMT (UK) »
I am researching descendants of William Burton ( born Dent WRY 1780, died Chester 1844) pawnbroker of Shoemaker's Row, married Anna Garrett 1817 in St.Martins,Chester.
In particular his grandson William Middleton Burton, Christened St.John's 9th May 1869, last reference I can find is attending funeral of his father James John Burton 17 June 1891.
He is listed in 1881 census with his parents.
Also at the funeral were sons-in-law Raingill, Simpson, Middleton.

William Middleton Burton then seems to disappear, although he could be the William Burton who married a Mary Frances Dalton in All Saints,Hoole Sept qtr 1903.

Any information from other descendants of William and Anna my, gggrandparents, would be appreciated.

Thanks very much with such a quick response, no wonder he disappeared off the map, I looked on Free BMD but obviously missed him.
There are no family records I could find showing his death.

Hello Crichtonl,

The Cheshire Record Office Wills Database has a Will for a William Burton, Chester, pawnbroker, dated 1853. It is possible to buy this online via the Record Office website.

Looking at the Cheshire Parish Database, there are baptisms for William and Anna BURTON, William described as a Cabinet Maker of Northgate Street. For example:

Chester St John's 02/09/1818 baptised Margaret, daughter of William and Anna Burton.

Chester St John's 05/04/1820 baptised Ann, daughter of William and Anna Burton.

Chester St John's 01/02/1824, baptised Leonard Samuel, son of William and Anna Burton.

Chester St John's 07/04/1826, baptised Jane, daughter William and Anna Burton.

Chester St John's, 01/02/1828, baptised William, son of William and Ann Burton.

Chester St John's 06/01/1830, baptised Mary, daughter of William and Ann Burton.

Chester St John's 03/07/1831 James John, son of William and Ann Burton.

All the above show that William was a Cabinet Maker of Northgate Street.

There are more. Do you know if this could be the same family?

Also, the RO index of Freemen of the City of Chester has an entry for William Burton, cabinet maker, made "Free" on 13/06/1818. He was made free by his Indenture.

Jo

Hi Crichton L

Welcome to Rootschat -

Overleigh cemetery in Chester has a searchable database.
There's a burial in May 1897 for a William Middleton Burton (pawnbroker) age 28. The grave number is P3202. If you then just search for the grave you should see there are three other people buried - James John Burton, Mary Simpson and William Balance.

Also on 'Ancestry' (subscription site) there's a public member tree and there are some details about a William Middleton Burton of Chester. He was married in Douglas in the Isle of Man to Gertrude Isabel Brancker in 1892. There appears to be one son Eric born in 1894. Eric is in the 1901 census at a school in Prestatyn.
William died in St Asaph in May 1897.

You might find some marriages on 'Cheshire BMD'.

Hope this helps

Regards

Neptune

To Jo,

Thanks for your research, yes all of those baptisms were William and Anna's children, my ggrandfather was Leonard Samuel who emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia in 1850.

The RO index of Freemen of the City of Chester confirms family oral history but the indenture detail is news.
William left Dent in 1803 and joined the English Army, Regiment unknown, finally being discharged from Chelsea Hospital in 1816 medically unfit, after his final posting in the 5th Royal Veterans Regiment.
He was supposed to retire to Kendal, so the reason for his move to Chester is still a mystery.

Hello Crichtonl,

Pleased the information was useful to you.

Have you found the RO website as the details of the Freemen are listed there?

http://www.cheshire.gov.uk/recoff/

Click on the Catalogues and Indexes and you get a list of those available. There is the Overleigh Cemetery as well as Freemen and Wills.

The RO may well hold the original Indenture. They have these on microfilm and can be copied. I found one there for my gt gt gt grandfather in 1813.

There is an archive in Chester called the Chester History and Heritage Centre, the link is enormous, so could I ask you to put that into the search engine and you will get it up. They may well have something on William Burton, Cabinet Maker of Northgate Street. They hold the directories going back many years. The assistants there are very helpful and a request via E-Mail might be worthwhile.

Is there any other specific information you want on this family?

Jo
