Need help dating a photo

The man in the photo was supposedly the university tutor of my ancestor.  Can anyone help with a date?  Also, does anyone out there know anything about academic dress at Irish schools?  Is it possible to know what university he was attending/working for by his gown, etc.?

Hello Ontario, welcome to Rootschat.

As the man is wearing a stylized gown rather than daily clothing he will be hard to date...could we see a colour scan of the whole thing please, including the outer corners of the mount, and if there is any printing on the back could we see that too...

Hello, I'm afraid I no longer have the original photo, just a scan.  But there was nothing written on the back.  I have another photo I think might be from the same era, I'll post it separately.

As China says this is difficult without seeing the original however the style of pose & set coupled with his hairstyle suggest an 1860's date.
