Hi mirrin,
I don't think he would have been transferred to Lanark, however, there was a a place in Renfrewshire called Quarriers Home where children were sent to but it was not R.C., this home transferred children to Canada, U.S.A. Australia and South Africa.
In those days if the father died the children were called orphans even if the mother was alive, I know one family who's ancestor died on the Friday two of the sons were sent to Quarriers Home on the Sunday and were on board a ship by the Thursday bound for Canada, they never saw their mother again and she was never given time to say goodbye to them.
I have no idea if Edinburgh had a home similar to that above, there was a Training Ship at Dundee called " The Marrs " whether this was for Dundee only I can't say, it had a very good reputation for training boys as apprentices on other types of work, but I would say Nazareth Home would be a safe bet.
Cheers.
Archie.
