Request for help from Crowboy re Mary Hales
« on: Friday 06 November 09 20:57 GMT (UK) »
You kindly helped me about a year ago with my question about Mary Hales who was baptised in 1780.  You sent me a list of all her siblings and the marriage of her parents.  Are you able to tell me her place of birth please?  Also, do you know if Mary's brother Thomas married a Catherine Dorman who gave birth to (another) Mary who then went on to marry William Woods.  I have the marriage certificate for Mary and William and it says her father is Thomas Hales.  Many thanks. Jo

Hi Jo

The baptisms and marriages I quoted for the Hales family c1773-81 in September 08 in response to your post were all from Uppingham Parish Registers and unless otherwise stated are from Uppingham.

Regarding Thomas Hales (and Catherine Dorman) - I could see no record of such union in Uppingham and no definitive way of determining whether this Thomas is Mary Hales brother and the same Thomas b 1778 referred to in my previous post.  There is a noticeable shortage of Hales entries after 1783 so I suspect they moved to another town/parish.  There seems to be a few Hales in Edith Weston though.

I wish I had been able to help you.

Thanks for trying to help anyway.  Do you know anyone who has access to the parish records for Edith Weston?  I hadn't realised when I asked that you just had Uppingham.  I have a copy of two pages of the 1841 census for Edith Weston which shows a Thomas & Catherine Hales and family living there.  He is 55 years old, so that makes him born in about 1786. I would have thought this would be accurate being a census?? Would your details also be accurate for Thomas born 1778?

Thanks.

Jo
