George Rogerson - father's name listed only, why?
« on: Wednesday 04 November 09 18:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am hoping someone has some ideas/advice to help me unearth information on George Rogerson, born circa 1806 in Lochmaben or Cummerton (sp?).

So far I have been able to find George on the 1841, 51 and 61 censuses and his death registration (in 1869). He was married twice, first to Janet Tweedie and then Agnes Fleming (after Janet's death).

George's death record lists only his father - William Rogerson, a labourer. I can't really understand why only his father's name is given; any ideas?

I have looked for a birth record for George Rogerson, born to William, and found only 1 result, but that was in Perth and the birth was legitimate, so I presume this is not the birth I am interested in.

I've also tried to find William Rogerson's who are old enough to be George's father and come across one possibility, born in 1791 and married to Agnes French, with whom he had 4 or 5 children. William was 23 years older than Agnes, and would have been 47 years old when their first child was born (and 56 when the last came along!). 47 seems quite an age to begin a family, especially at that time, so I wonder if there is a previous marriage or something else that I can't see which ties in to the George I am interested in.

I'd really appreciate some ideas on where to look next!

Hi,
Thanks for you reply.
I have George as being married twice, to Janet Tweedie who died in 1848, and then Agnes Fleming who died in 1866.
Yes, George had a son James who married Mary Howat, I am descended from James.

Hi again rabbiegal

Have sent you a PM, also 47 is not too old to start a family as I have direct relative Archibald Graham, schoolmaster of Westerkirk, who never had a child until he was 42 and his last at 63!

I am also descended from this line. I am new to this site and am researching the Rogersons from Lochmaben.
