Completed thanks! Help please to id uniform & date
« on: Monday 02 November 09 15:00 GMT (UK) »
I would appreciate help with this photo from the collection at my local library - one chap is clearly navy, but what branch of the military does the other man come from?

Also - any help as to date would be appreciated   :)

thanks very much
Rosemary

Don't know how I missed this one before.
Well the sailor chap is a petty officer, gunnery branch by the look of it.
Cap tally reads HMS Astraea. Astraea was launched 1893 and commissioned in 1895 so the photo must date from that year onwards.

The other chap I'll perhaps leave to the real uniform experts.  :)
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

The Petty Officer is wearing a King's crown, so it is after Victoria's death in 1901.

The soldier is Household Cavalry, by the looks of things Royal Horse Guards (The Blues), the peaked cap puts it after 1905-ish.

Isandlwana
...Neither praise nor blame add to their epitaph but like it be simple as that which marked Thermopylae.
Tell it in England those that pass us by, here, faithful to their charge, her soldiers lie.

Neil1821 & Isandlwana

sorry for my delay in replying - I've been away at me mum's - but thank you very much for the info - which will be added to the catalogue at the library, increasing the chances of people with an interest (either family or military) finding this photo.

thanks for your help
