Interpreting navy Record - help please
« on: Monday 02 November 09 13:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi Guys

Im trying to find out information about my grans father for her.  I have manged to find a navt record but I cant really read it or understand what it means.  Can anyone help me? I would particularly be interested in what his position was etc, what his ships were, what countries he may have been in but any inform would be greatly appreciated many thanks.

I attach a copy of both. I think the second one with his photo is a copy of his Merchant Navy Record. Hope they are legible.  IS there anywhere else I can get some info on him from?

thanks in advance

What you have is a standard naval service record. For me, the items of interest on these records are the ships on which he served, the dates and the positions.

So on HMS Vivid II, he served as a Stoker Second Class (II)  from 16/11/1917 until 26/02/1918.

HMS Endymion as Stoker II from 27/02/1918 to 14/10/1918, etc.

The records won't show you where he went on the ships, I'm afraid.

Hi
Thanks for that.  I think a stoke second class was a coal shoveler right and was the lowest rank on  board?
I think the last ships says Temeraire - is that right?  I have tried googling it but cant find a name like that around that period.
The last entry says that he served until 13 May 1919- I cant read what is says next to that - any ideas?
Thank you

Shella,

The Temeraire was a battleship and you can read some basic info about it here:-

The writing that you can't make out says 'Discharged Shore on Demob' (Demobilisation).
